Sydney emerged from lockdown yesterday, with shops, bars & cinemas re-opening & travel restrictions within the Greater Sydney area relaxed - though you still can't 'leave town' & head for regional areas... or interstate, so it's still a bit worse than this time last year when L-SP & I did our roadtrip of a few thousand kilometres within New South Wales

The traffic, both human & automobile, has increased exponentially, especially around the shopping centres, where you'd think we'd never seen a Megamall before ever, instead of it being only about 3 months or so... I had to call on one of my flooring stores yesterday which is just near a large Mall & it took 5 minutes just to get out of their driveway & back to the main road... I remember last year's lockdown traffic very fondly - there wasn't any!! Even during this much longer lockdown, there were more cars on the roads than the ghost town we became last year

We are, of course, looking forward to seeing friends & family, both at their homes & seated at a restaurant/café... but it won't feel like it's really over until I can put Sydney in the rear view mirror on the highway north, or south, or west out of here. Going through the 2012 roadtrip diary has stoked the wanderlust!!

Not that I would expect any of my limited audience to be avid listeners, fans, or supporters of Joe Rogan, but a little fact-checking of his latest podcast about Australia's Delta variant experience...

“There’s some crazy shit going on right now where the army is trying to keep people inside in Australia. They have full on government lockdowns where the government is flying helicopters over streets saying ‘go back indoors, you’re not allowed outside’.”

No - helicopters with loudspeakers are not overhead as I type this. And you are allowed outside for a number of reasons - food & essentials shopping, exercise, home-schooling sanity breaks... & essential workers, which kind of includes me, in a limited capacity. We're certainly not talking about a Chinese-style operation where people were literally shut inside. The helicopters have been used over some beach areas to encourage those not in any of the above categories to go home, but it's not a constant thing, nor a Sydney-wide, nor indeed a nation-wide practice

As to the army forcing people to stay at home, well... only if you're supposed to be there...

From Monday, some 300 army personnel will help police go door to door to ensure people who have tested positive are isolating, New South Wales police commissioner Mick Fuller told a news conference.

The military personnel will not be armed and will be under police command, he said.

In summary: No, we have not become a heavy-handed, authoritarian police state, nor is there any danger of a military coup. The people who have complained loudest about these restrictions, are the first ones to break them, resulting in necessarily stricter enforcement measures, which, of course, they complain about as well. It's a looooong way from storming government buildings in 2nd-hand combat fatigues, armed with assault rifles, just because you can't get a haircut... & more of a storm in a takeaway teacup - oolong, with almond milk & a dash of manuka honey

And so, the weekend... ends... I think - things have been pretty quiet 'round here, so the days tend to bleed into one another. L-SP is on night-shifts & so is a little confused about what day it is & my work is scarce enough that instead of only having Sundays at home, I've been home a lot more, so my internal calendar is messed up as well. Driving around, it's hard to pick what day it is, as the traffic feels like weekend volume on a weekday & then gets busier on weekends. All I know is that even with the reduced numbers, there are still too many people who don't seem to have a destination, or purpose for their drive, so they just dawdle along... while I'm trying to get 'round them so I can get to where I'm going, because I do have a place to be, at a particular time!!!

Sometimes I feel like...

The Federal government paid me some money! All those hours on hold, on the phone, trying really hard & only twice failing to keep a level tone in my voice seem to have paid off with... not as much as I'd normally earn in a week, but more than I sometimes have in recent months, so I'll declare it satisfactory. Whether the payment is an ongoing thing, or something I have to re-apply for every week or so, remains to be seen but it should be easier now that I've finally solved the mystery of the recalcitrant MyGov account & linked all the departments I need to be in contact with

So that's actually a weight off my shoulders I'd been very conscious of bearing...

There is some talk of trades & construction being allowed to resume in a controlled capacity from next week, but I'm not sure what that means for my work in particular. I await some kind of update from the CEO of the company I contract to, as do all his installers, salespeople, warehouse & admin staff, I'm sure

Long-Suffering Partner & I had to go to the local megamall yesterday for some essentials we can't get at our local, closer shops. And what a sight the place was...

Of course, the greenery is usually just decoration to make you forget you're in a soulless retail environment, but given the deserted state of the place, it was hard to not imagine that Nature was reclaiming the swampland the place was built on in the 1960s

Couldn't help singing this song all the time we were there...

This is the face... okay faces of wilful stupidity. Ignorant obstinacy. Misinformed belligerence - insert your own adjective & noun combination here...

Whose human rights are being 'attacked'? Easy - the vast majority doing the sensible thing & minimising their travel & contact with others, to deny the Delta variant's opportunity to spread. Whose job is under threat? Also easy - the medical & emergency service workers who have seen & know first-hand what this virus can do & will have to deal with the results of your stupidity when the case numbers go up again in a few days, thanks to this...

Who's being 'controlled' by 'communism'? Easy - the under-educated mass who blindly follow what they're told by people who have no qualifications in medicine, sociology, logistics & apparently political science, let alone history. A communist state would never allow such a protest to take place for starters...

Scenes like this do make me think we need a kind of purge though. But Stalin & Pol Pot had it wrong - instead of weeding out the educated & intelligentsia & executing them, I think we need to go the opposite way

Barely a mask to be seen & a bunch of signs cribbed from protests in other countries over the last 18 months or so... the usual drivel about personal freedoms & vaccine paranoia

How to prolong a lockdown: Walk, without a mask, in close proximity to thousands of people from infectious areas of town, protesting about the lockdown & let the superspreading commence...

Thursday... a day with a couple of things to actually do

We're off shortly to pick up my Grandmother's ashes. She died last year, after a fall in the nursing home she was in & never woke up. Not the home's, nor the staff's fault & no blame is attached - these things happen. But I hadn't seen her for a few months leading up to her death, as Covid19 had restricted access to aged care homes. Given how many elderly people died from it last year, you can't argue with the precaution, but I can lament its consequence

Anyway, my Mother has steadfastly refused to have anything to do with the funeral, or its long aftermath & an e-mail from the funeral directors earlier this year went unanswered, until I found it & answered it myself, with the result that L-SP & I are off to collect Grandmother today & keep her... somewhere... I haven't actually given a great deal of thought to that bit yet & I haven't mentioned it to my Mother or sister at all... & have no plans to do so until they ask

Then, with the funeral parlour's proximity to Chatswood - a bit of an Asian enclave, we'll be hitting one of our preferred barbecue butcheries for some roast pork & duck. Dinner - sorted!

Afterwards, my battle to find some kind of financial relief from either Federal, or State government during this currently open-ended lockdown, will continue

Some big birds...

Cassowary

A Cassowary - native to the rainforests of Australia's top end. You do NOT want to encounter one of these guys in the wild... they're aggressively territorial & the kind of bird that reminds you they're not too far descended from dinosaurs

Emu Head

An Emu - found all over the place once you get out of the cities & towns. Not as bad-tempered as the Cassowary, but still best to steer clear of them!

Tuesday & another domestic day, clearing, cleaning & reorganising the garage to try & fit both Dorian the workhorse & Laura the roadtripper in there, along with all the various other bits'n'pieces. Then defrosting the freezer, cutting my hand in 2 places, sweeping out the kitchen & entry hall. Then the usual trip to the supermarket to do battle with the panicking, starving hordes & back home to plan what I can do around here tomorrow...

Excitement, adventure & really wild things, I know...

Monday - the first 'official' day of my enforced holiday. I've spent it finalising my Business Activity Statement & sending it off to my accountant for perusal/approval, doing battle with the Australian 'MyGov' website, which wants me to link to a particular department's database in order to register for lockdown payments, but won't actually let me do it...

... & remembering how to play a guitar piece of mine that I wrote over 10 years ago & has been rattling 'round my head for the last couple of days. I have a recording of it, thank god, otherwise there were a few chords I couldn't remember how to play. It was also a great help to remember that I should have a capo on the first fret - made things a lot easier after that!!

Having scared a couple of people yesterday, with a photo of one of Australia's more nasty animals - & bolstering our reputation as a dangerous place to live, here are a couple of photos that reinforce the clichés about our more famous... & less deadly... marsupials

Sunday... it's been a very quiet day. Breakfast at home before a quick trip to the supermarket for essentials, then home via the park atop the headland we live on. SO MANY people out walking, running, flying kites(??!!??), that we elected to not join them & came home, where L-SP has been listening to podcasts related to a work project & I've been doing my quarterly Business Activity Statement for the Tax Dept, soundtracked by Spotify & a little photo work...

Stricter lockdown regulations mean that I'm having an enforced 2 weeks (at least!!) off from work. No 'non-essential' building works are allowed, which certainly means flooring installations & therefore means no measures, estimates or inspections for me. I've just spoken with the CEO of the company I contract to & he's closing all the stores 'til the end of July... or until this outbreak runs its course

I was out doing what's turned out to be my last measure for the month this morning & so was most of the Northern Beaches population. I have never seen so many people out walking, running, playing... even on a Saturday. It goes to show why gyms are such a growth industry - we're certainly seeing now just how many people usually do all their exercise indoors...

Sydney... for the foreseeable future:-

Friday night... & nowhere to go

It's funny - Long-Suffering Partner & I are not ones to go out a lot & truth be told we'd probably spend more Friday nights at home these days than socialising, or doing/seeing something. but take the option away & all of a sudden, cabin-fever sets in. What we probably miss most is just going out to dinner, which we normally do quite often - it's how we keep our kitchen at home so clean...

We haven't been to the cinema since 2019 & haven't really missed it that much, but boy, what I'd give to go & see Black Widow right now, or Gunpowder Milkshake, or The Sparks Brothers documentary, or My Name Is Gulpilil - about our most celebrated Aboriginal actor. I could watch the last 2 on television quite happily, but I love going to the cinema for big, dumb, fun action movies

And let's not talk about the last time I saw any live music... mostly because it's been so long I can't remember who it was we saw. King Crimson are/were supposed to tour here around September/October for the first time EVER & it's looking unlikely. Don't talk to me about that either - I may cry

Overseas travel?? Only in my photo archive... Here's another from the Marin County Civic Centre:-

NSW's Deputy Premier John Barilaro has hinted that new restrictions could be on the table for the parts of Sydney, telling Sky News "we've lost control" of the virus.

Mr Barilaro revealed it wouldn’t be possible for the Greater Sydney lockdown to end on Friday night and said , while a curfew wasn’t being considered, more restrictions may be needed for some parts of Sydney.

“We may have to go further or tighten restrictions in some local government areas, we accept that but what does that mean?” he said. “It means making sure there’s less movement of people going into homes, going into construction sites, going into retail.”

It comes after NSW recorded 112 new Covid-19 cases on Monday, bringing the total number of infections in the outbreak to 678.

My job basically is going into people's homes, going into construction sites & then taking my plans & reports into a retail store...

Watching the storm roll in...

The only notable thing for today is I'll be getting my first dose of Microsoft trackers... 5G receivers... mind control serum Covid19 vaccine. Due to ever-changing medical advice, I'm currently up for the Pfizer, though who knows, by the time I get to the centre later today, I might only get saline solution & an aspirin

This is the Doctor I really want to go & see!!
