Dear Justin,

This is Future You - writing to tell you to not waste your time worrying about USA politics in general & any of the myriad Trump stories in particular. No... I'm not going to tell you how the election in November turns out, nor anything that happens after

All I'm going to tell you is that worrying about it is pointless. You can't do anything about it, no matter how angry a lot of the shit going down makes you. You can't change anyone's mind about any of it, no matter how misguided, indoctrinated or just plain fucked in the head they are

Monument Valley, Arches & Yosemite National Parks & all the other natural wonders of the continent have been there for thousands of years & will still be there once its people have sorted their shit out for themselves & it's safe to go back there without body armour. With a little luck, you'll still be mobile & compos mentis enough to enjoy them

Hell... with a little more luck the orange b@stard will choke on a cheeseburger before November anyway... No, I'm not saying that's what happens, but it's a nice, little optimistic dream you can hold onto in the meantime. Because, as you know, there's no one who can replace him that has the same cultish hold over his mob - not within his family, nor in the Republican Party... & even without death by dietary misadventure, he's not exactly a picture of health & vitality, is he?

So when you see some story, or sycophantic suck-up about him - take a deep breath... & try to think a little more long-term about this

And don't, whatever you do, think about how low the bar has been set for political leadership in that powderkeg of a country & worry about who has the wherewithal to slither under it & take his place

The List

An anguished question from a Trump supporter: ‘Why do liberals think Trump supporters are stupid?’

THE SERIOUS ANSWER: Here’s what the majority of anti-Trump voters honestly feel about Trump supporters en masse:

That when you saw a man who had owned a fraudulent University, intent on scamming poor people, you thought "Fine." (https://www.usatoday.com/.../trump-university.../502387002/)

That when you saw a man who had made it his business practice to stiff his creditors, you said, "Okay." (https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-hotel-paid-millions...)

That when you heard him proudly brag about his own history of sexual abuse, you said, "No problem." (https://abcnews.go.com/.../list-trumps-accusers.../story...)

That when he made up stories about seeing Muslim-Americans in the thousands cheering the destruction of the World Trade Center, you said, "Not an issue." (https://www.washingtonpost.com/.../donald-trumps.../)

That when you saw him brag that he could shoot a man on Fifth Avenue and you wouldn't care, you exclaimed, "He sure knows me." (https://www.usatoday.com/.../president-donald.../4073405002/)

That when you heard him relating a story of an elderly guest of his country club, an 80-year old man, who fell off a stage and hit his head, to Trump replied: “‘Oh my God, that’s disgusting,’ and I turned away. I couldn’t—you know, he was right in front of me, and I turned away. I didn’t want to touch him. He was bleeding all over the place. And I felt terrible, because it was a beautiful white marble floor, and now it had changed color. Became very red.” You said, "That's cool!" (https://www.gq.com/story/donald-trump-howard-stern-story)

That when you saw him mock the disabled, you thought it was the funniest thing you ever saw. (https://www.nbcnews.com/.../donald-trump-criticized-after...)

That when you heard him brag that he doesn't read books, you said, "Well, who has time?" (https://www.theatlantic.com/.../americas-first.../549794/)

That when the Central Park Five were compensated as innocent men convicted of a crime they didn't commit, and he angrily said that they should still be in prison, you said, "That makes sense." (https://www.usatoday.com/.../what-trump-has.../1501321001/)

That when you heard him tell his supporters to beat up protesters and that he would hire attorneys, you thought, "Yes!" (https://www.latimes.com/.../la-na-trump-campaign-protests...)

That when you heard him tell one rally to confiscate a man's coat before throwing him out into the freezing cold, you said, "What a great guy!" (https://www.independent.co.uk/.../donald-trump-orders...)

That you have watched the parade of neo-Nazis and white supremacists with whom he curries favor, while refusing to condemn outright Nazis, and you have said, "Thumbs up!" (https://www.theatlantic.com/.../why-cant-trump.../567320/)

That you hear him unable to talk to foreign dignitaries without insulting their countries and demanding that they praise his electoral win, you said, "That's the way I want my President to be." (https://www.huffpost.com/.../trump-insult-foreign...)

That you have watched him remove expertise from all layers of government in favor of people who make money off of eliminating protections in the industries they're supposed to be regulating and you have said, "What a genius!" (https://www.politico.com/.../138-trump-policy-changes...)

That you have heard him continue to profit from his businesses, in part by leveraging his position as President, to the point of overcharging the Secret Service for space in the properties he owns, and you have said, "That's smart!" (https://www.usnews.com/.../how-is-donald-trump-profiting...)

That you have heard him say that it was difficult to help Puerto Rico because it was in the middle of water and you have said, "That makes sense." (https://www.washingtonpost.com/.../the-very-big-ocean.../)

That you have seen him start fights with every country from Canada to New Zealand while praising Russia and quote, "falling in love" with the dictator of North Korea, and you have said, "That's statesmanship!" (https://www.cnn.com/.../donald-trump-dictators.../index.html)

That Trump separated children from their families and put them in cages, managed to lose track of 1500 kids, has opened a tent city incarceration camp in the desert in Texas - he explains that they’re just “animals” - and you say, “Well, OK then.” (https://www.nbcnews.com/.../more-5-400-children-split...)

That you have witnessed all the thousand and one other manifestations of corruption and low moral character and outright animalistic rudeness and contempt for you, the working American voter, and you still show up grinning and wearing your MAGA hats and threatening to beat up anybody who says otherwise. (https://www.americanprogress.org/.../confronting-cost.../)

What you don't get, Trump supporters, is that our succumbing to frustration and shaking our heads, thinking of you as stupid, may very well be wrong and unhelpful, but it's also...hear me...charitable.
Because if you're NOT stupid, we must turn to other explanations, and most of them are less flattering.

Was he the monster, or was he just the public face of it? Will it make things better, worse, or pretty much the same, now he's been removed from the top job. We've all seen what's behind the curtain of misty-eyed 'land of the free, home of the brave, beacon of democracy, bring me your tired etc...' now - There's a racist, bigoted, sexist, repressive, greedy & self-obsessed country behind there, that at least 74 million voters are a part of. I admire Joe Biden for even putting his hand up for the job of trying to deal with all that, in the midst of a pandemic, a changing global climate, power balance & economy. I'm not sure I'd know where to start in a peaceful, inclusive fashion

A Department of Defence official said something like 'The DC insurrection wasn't sudden, or unexpected like a stroke, or an aneurysm... this was like diabetes - the results of a long-term disease'. I'm paraphrasing because I can't find the actual quote which I heard on ABC radio a couple of times today, but (s)he was right. The roots of the unrest go way deeper & waaaay further back than just the last 4 years... through both Republican & Democrat administrations alike. People aren't disenfranchised & disadvantaged overnight. Trump didn't build the bomb... but, for better or worse, he certainly applied a blowtorch to the fuse!!

Meanwhile the Great Pumpkin will have his hands full dealing with a bunch of troubles old & new, as the protective shield of the Presidency is taken from him

I'm looking forward to retiring my Trump icon... I wonder if the world will let me? Will the "Uncivil War", that Biden referred to, fizzle out, or fire up?

As more details emerge of the sinister undertones of the DC riots last week, with photos of armed, masked, camo-clad dipshits carrying cable-tie restraints, recordings of people chanting "Hang Mike Pence", along with the other usual 3-word slogans (Stop The Steal', 'Count The Votes', or alternatively 'Stop the Count', '4 More Years'... 'USA! USA!' etc...) Why is it these slogans only have 3 words? I have my theory... what's yours?

Having seen Arnold Schwarzenegger - former Republican Governor of California - comparing the riot to Kristallnacht, one of the great leaps forward by the nascent Nazi Party & personally finding it a bit of a long bow to draw & just another case of celebrity bandwagon-jumping... it was interesting to see some more images & reports from the riots, that actually bear Arnold out quite a bit. Put simply - you've heard one right-wing, racist fuckwit, you've heard them all... The baseless, unfounded, racist, bigoted, anti-semitic bullshit remains the same, only the names change to suit the times

Interesting that these white supremacists claim that "Europeans are the children of god"... given that Christianity was born in a Middle-Eastern country & that Europe actually includes Muslim countries like Turkey, Bosnia, Albania, Kosovo & even Kazakhstan. The irony that Kazakhstan's most famous exponent is actually an English Jew is not lost on me. I wonder if it's lost on Trump's supporters?!

Probably... as are a great many other things, I'd wager
waitingman: (Trump)
Just suppose, for one moment... forgetting all logic & likelihood... that the Great Pumpkin is right & that the Election has been 'stolen' from him. Suppose that, somehow, the Democrat Party has managed to convince people in all 50 States (okay, maybe not all 50, but enough to not make it look obvious), from County to Governor, to engineer the results to favour Joe Biden. Suppose that they have managed to do that & make it impossible to prove & that nobody has any record of any such deal or process ever being mentioned, let alone actually done

Imagine the amazing amount of organisation & intelligence it would take to pull it off. The incredible, intricate attention to detail that made sure every little thing went without a hitch. The galaxy-sized amount of money it would take to get it done & to ensure the ongoing silence of those who did it

And finally, suppose that the people capable of such a feat would think the Great Pumpkin was worth all that effort & money - that he wouldn't just fuck it all up on his own

If the Democrats have people like that, or are in league with people like that, then wouldn't you want them to be in power? After all, they were in power for 8 years, not so long ago & the most controversial thing they did was to enable affordable health care for low-income people & their families... Definitely something sinister there, right? Provided, of course, that you further suppose they're not some international paedophilic cabal who have done all of this just so they can keep fiddling with kids

Imagine people with the reach, means, capital & capability to not only run the country, but shape the world, feeling so threatened by an egomaniacal failed businessman, his troupe of sycophantic coat-tail riders & a bunch of backwoods hicks...

Can I have my microchipped vaccine/sedative now please, Mr Gates? And how about a USB port in the back of my head for future upgrades..?

For someone whose main claim to 'fame' was reality television, the Great Pumpkin has obviously lost his grip on actual reality - preferring his scripted version of it where he can't lose

This latest act of desperation is akin to him arguing with the show's producers... except it's a Secretary of State he's trying to bully into lying. And a Republican one at that. Surely that's some kind of Federal offence... or surely it should be - intimidating a public official? Except, from the transcript, it doesn't sound like Brad Raffensperger was very intimidated... no matter how many lawyers were listening in

At least & at last, it shows that even the Republican Party is emerging from under the Great Pumpkin's thrall. Can't we just lock the buffoon in a safe & soft location, with a mobile phone that has no network connections, which he can write his Tweets on & some actors who can assure him that he's still President? He'd probably fire a few each week, but there's no shortage of out-of-work actors at the moment who'd jump at the chance to be in this modern re-interpretation of King Lear

So Trump has infected the USA with another disease... as if Covid19 isn't enough

Now there are many people displaying worrying symptoms of sophophobia - a fear of learning, or education

Combine it with the sexism that the outgoing President has normalised during his entire 4 year term & you have the current kerfuffle over First Lady-Elect Jill Biden's use of the word 'Doctor' in front of her name, as she has a doctorate in, of all things, education!!

The manufactured outrage over someone who dared to study further & has the audacity to use the word 'Doctor' "when she hasn't even delivered a baby!!" is also reminiscent of what I thought was a peculiarly Australian tradition - Tall Poppy Syndrome - the tendency to cut down those who stick their head above the common crop. "What makes you think you're so special?!? You're no better than the rest of us!!!" - an ugly result of our convict & working class origins... well those of us who are of Anglo-Saxon descent anyway (Let me tell y'all what it's like, being male, middle-class & white!!) - now spreading globally like a... well, like a virus

Given that the kerfuffle started with an 'opinion piece' in the Wall St Journal & has since been backed up by an 'editorial' from the same newspaper, it can be argued that it's just an exercise in that all-American pastime 'Free Speech'... the same supposed right that all bigots, sexists, fear-mongers, racists & conspiracy theory loonies hide behind when they spray their bile in public. But freedom of speech is NOT freedom from its consequences, which is why those on the aforementioned list howl in such outrage when someone disagrees with them & takes them to task for their inflammatory oratory. To those people, freedom of speech shouldn't be granted to anyone who disagrees with them. From there, it just dissolves into name-calling & abuse, based on & fuelled by the aforementioned list. Then the street protests... then the rallies.... then... you wind up with a President who does & says these sorts of things with impunity, which, of course, then emboldens those with similar views to express them even more loudly & vehemently. Repeat the cycle until your country loses its respect around the world, your population dies in massive numbers from a disease whose spread can be mostly managed with simple, preventative measures, which the aforementioned list politicise & demonise to the point of ineffectiveness, all the while claiming it's a hoax as the bodies pile up & your economy wobbles towards collapse

That's not a long bow to draw, it's a simple game of falling dominoes... you know - the things the military were so afraid of during the Cold War. Funny how that's so credible when you can point at an enemy who's "over there", but is apparently nonsense when the enemy is within your own society...

As for the whole Dr Biden outrage, I think it was best summed up by Doug Emhoff, who tweeted the obvious "This story would never have been written about a man"

"In Georgia, where a laborious hand-recount of votes is taking place, the Republican Secretary of State told the Washington Post that counties are already reporting that the hand recount of paper ballots matches the Dominion numbers perfectly.

The agency that oversees election security — the US Department of Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) — joined a national coalition of government agencies in putting out a statement unequivocally denying the claims.

"There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised," the statement reads. They characterised the election as "the most secure in American history".

As for Trump's claims that Dominion is owned by Democrats — the company did make a one-time philanthropic donation to Bill and Hillary Clinton's non-profit in 2014, but the company's lobbyists have also donated to Republicans like Mitch McConnell. The Clintons have zero stake in Dominion's operations, both companies confirmed to The Associated Press.

Election security officials have been warning against using machines for years, not because there's documented evidence to show they've been used to tamper with election results, but because any glitches could lead to distrust in the system.

It's one reason why most precincts still rely on paper ballots and, even counties that do use technology, have options for post-vote, human audits.

Ahead of the 2020 election, the Democratic party led a charge in the Senate to increase federal oversight of election vendors like Dominion. The Republican party blocked the bill.

The vulnerabilities to the US voting system may be real, but the exploitation of those vulnerabilities isn't happening quite like Trump says."

I haven't been posting about politics for a while, but that doesn't mean I haven't been watching... & watching is about all I can do

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade has issued a warning about not visiting the USA, due to potential violence around the election. I note from the article that many Walmart stores are removing guns & ammunition from the shop floor, to discourage looters, but it may be too late, as people have been stocking up on weapons and military-style tactical gear as fearful Americans prepare to hunker down. Many gun shops have sold out of ammunition, and firearm stocks are running low.

I think I also mentioned the potential for Civil War version 2.0 a few months back... My name, apparently, is Nostradamus II. I know it's mostly scare-mongering, but it's being mongered by both sides of the yawning political divide in the USA & with the amount of civil unrest already going on, that's separate to the actual election, it's only going to take one Proud Boy draped in a rebel flag & a MAGA cap to light the blue touch paper... Meanwhile, also as I mentioned a while back, it's looking increasingly likely that the election will be decided, ultimately, in the Supreme Court, where... well, you know what happened last week - a new judge was installed after 60 million people had already voted in a Federal Election... Please explain how that's democratic, or even truly republican?!?!

Meanwhile, it looks like I'll have to postpone my long-desired European trip for a while, as Covid19 has decided to go back for a 3rd time this year - especially to the United Kingdom. I honestly don't know what's worse - denying the existence & severity of the virus & causing thousands of people to die... or knowing full well how serious the disease is, but then stuffing up its control & suppression, due to a lack of backbone, or intestinal fortitude, or... let's just say 'cojones' to get the job done - & causing thousands of people to die. Again, as I've previously ranted, the human race has faced these things before & has always come through, after drastic measures & consequences. Yet here we are today, complaining that this virus either has, or will, ruin civilisation (& it hasn't even been a year!!!), just because the economy is having a hiccup. The fucking Great Depression went for nearly a decade & you know who caused that? Greedy economists... the same guys who are demanding everyone & everything go back to work - public health be damned

"Following the Trump campaign’s use of a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” during the fireworks portion of the Republican National Convention Thursday night, the Cohen estate issued a statement criticizing the unauthorized use of the oft-covered classic. “We are exploring our legal options,” the estate warned on Friday.

“We are surprised and dismayed that the RNC would proceed knowing that the Cohen Estate had specifically declined the RNC’s use request, and their rather brazen attempt to politicize and exploit in such an egregious manner ‘Hallelujah,’ one of the most important songs in the Cohen song catalogue,” said Michelle L. Rice, legal representative of the Cohen Estate.

“Had the RNC requested another song, ‘You Want it Darker,’ for which Leonard won a posthumous Grammy in 2017, we might have considered approval of that song.”

During the fireworks that closed out the convention, Tori Kelly’s rendition of “Hallelujah” — which the singer recorded for the soundtrack of the 2016 animated film Sing — played on the RNC broadcast alongside patriotic songs like “She’s a Grand Old Flag” and Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA.”

Similarly, Sony/ATV Music Publishing president and global chief marketing officer Brian J. Monaco said in a statement, “On the eve of the finale of the convention, representatives from the Republican National Committee contacted us regarding obtaining permission for a live performance of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah.’ We declined their request.”

The unauthorized use of “Hallelujah” is just the latest dustup between the Trump campaign and nearly every artist the president has played music by on the campaign trail; the Tom Petty estate, the Rolling Stones and Neil Young are just some of those who have decried — and threatened legal action against — Trump for his rally soundtracks.

A rep for the RNC did not immediately reply to a request for comment."

Look, I know it's resorting to stereotypical thinking, but I can't help assigning a skin colour to the victim & the shooter. And no, they're not the same colour. To be honest, the victim could well be white, or Latin American, or Asian... being angry about police murdering unarmed people is not an exclusively black thing & deserves to be supported & amplified by anyone with a functioning brain. But... Twitter has started putting fact-check links on The Great Pumpkin's tweets &, predictably, he's not happy about it... threatening to shut social media companies down, which of course, he can't do

It all stems from his rants about postal votes, which, somehow, in his fried cranial organ, he thinks will be abused by the Democrats & used for voter fraud, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. But that's never stopped him spreading bullshit propaganda before, so Twitter have stepped in

And I love the hypocrisy... Well - I don't, but seeing this in print just makes me smile, albeit somewhat ruefully

"Further stoking the fire on the postal voting issue, Florida newspaper the Tampa Bay Times has now revealed that Trump’s press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, who has been defending her boss’s attacks on postal voting, has voted by mail in every single Florida election she’s voted in.

Ms McEnany defended her and the President’s right to vote by mail when asked why everyone else shouldn’t be allowed to as well.

“Absentee voting has the word absent in it for a reason,” she told the Tampa Bay Times.

“It means you’re absent from the jurisdiction or unable to vote in person. President Trump is against the Democrat plan to politicise the coronavirus and expand mass mail-in voting without a reason, which has a high propensity for voter fraud. This is a simple distinction that the media fails to grasp,” she told the newspaper.

Florida does not have absentee voting: you can vote by post prior to election day for any reason you like, a simple distinction some in politics fail to grasp."

Well, it's been about a week since I touched on this subject - give or take a day...

Are you a 'smug liberal', or a 'reckless republican'?

Some highlights... or lowlights, more accurately...

I’ve heard of Muslim women in America being taunted for wearing hijabs, I’ve heard of Jewish men being mocked for wearing yarmulkes and now I’ve heard it all: A friend of mine was cursed by a passing stranger the other day for wearing a protective mask.

When the president visited Phoenix a week ago, some residents who’d turned out to see him harangued journalists in masks, “saying how we’re only wearing masks to instill fear,” BrieAnna Frank, a reporter with The Arizona Republic, told Tom Jones of Poynter. Frank posted a Twitter thread with videos in which journalists were loudly accused of being “on the wrong side of patriotism” and “like communists.”

Outside the State Capitol in Sacramento two days later, a woman held a sign that said: “Do you know who Dr. Judy Mikovits is? Then don’t tell me I need a silly mask.”

Mikovits is a discredited scientist whose wild assertions and scaremongering regarding vaccines have made her a hero to conspiracy theorists and a social media and YouTube star. Naturally, masks factor into her repertoire. She has claimed that “wearing the mask literally activates your own virus.”

How has this virus become so incredibly politicised in the USA, to the point where people would rather die, than practise common consensus?!?!
