I'm writing this down to work it all out in my head... This one's all about Australian politics, so feel free to skip it if you're not from 'round here. Hell... feel free to skip it if you are!!

The 'Voice' referendum seems to be exposing the not-very-well-hidden-in-the-first-place undercurrent of racism in many Australians - not necessarily only those of Anglo descent, but many former Europeans as well - towards the Australian indigenous population, because they are being offered a Voice to the Federal Parliament, designed to make representations to the Government on matters relating to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Island people & their culture/land etc...

A good thing, you might think... & about time. Sounds perfectly reasonable to allow them to have some input, if not influence, on decisions that affect their lives & livelihood. Things like education & social policy, to the granting of mining licenses to go & dig anywhere the Miners like for whatever traces of whatever particular rock they're looking for, then leave the place looking like an impact crater on the Moon when they're done... as has been the case for about the last 100 years or so. Things that have simply been passed &/or granted by the Federal Government, usually in return for huge 'donations' by whichever consortium, or industry body wants a favour. These sorts of people are, no surprise, vehemently against the 'Voice', as it means they can't just steamroll over any indigenous opposition on their way to a tidy profit

Rampant capitalism aside, the emotive argument the 'Vote No' campaign are weaponising, is that the Indigenous peoples don't deserve a special advisory body or, if they do, why can't the rest of us have one too?! To my ears, this sounds a lot like all those men who complain about International Women's Day & demand a Men's Day equivalent, conveniently forgetting that the other 364 of any given year, are basically days for them already. The parallel here is that both ideas are designed to redress an existing & established imbalance. Frankly, it would be fantastic if there were no need for the Voice at all, but we're dealing with a socio-economic & political world that not only has a huge head-start & tactical advantage in the way things are run, it's left our indigenous peoples hobbled back at the starting line, or in some cases, not even invited to be in the race... In order to bring things to a somewhat even keel, some extra help is required for now & that's what the Voice is - an opportunity to bring people who for centuries now have been marginalised, denigrated, repressed & diminished, in from the cold, so to speak. To acknowledge their culture & beliefs & find better ways to work with them

No one complained when the Federal Government passed the National Disability Insurance Scheme about 10 years ago, as a means to give disabled people greater access to services they needed. No one said they were getting unfair special treatment. What's the problem with helping the disadvantaged then?? Ohhhh.... because they're black? And for years, they've been portrayed & seen as ungrateful, recalcitrant, refusing to integrate into 'our' society... a bunch of uneducated drunks. Hey anyone from the rest of the world still reading at this point - does this sound familiar?!?

The other tactic being employed by... well kind of by both 'Yes' & 'No' campaigners, actually... has been to make this a politically divisive 'Left' vs 'Right' issue... a battle between those who are 'woke' & those who aren't (what's the opposite of 'woke' anyway) to the point where the original purpose of the referendum has been lost in muddied water that's now close to boiling. At what point did we Australians take a look at the political turmoil in the USA & think 'That's fantastic - we should definitely get some of that!!' We should absolutely choose an ideological side & abandon critical thought. We should totally think that if you're not 100% with us, you're against us & we hate you

I know Australia has a lot of sheep... but I thought they were mostly of the 4-legged variety

The simple fact is this: Here's the proposed amendment - “Chapter IX Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples - 129 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice

In recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of Australia:

i: there shall be a body, to be called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice;
ii: the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice may make representations to the Parliament and the Executive Government of the Commonwealth on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples;
iii: the Parliament shall, subject to this Constitution, have power to make laws with respect to matters relating to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice, including its composition, functions, powers and procedures.”

The 'No' campaign's official objection to this is: The jurisdiction of the Voice extends beyond matters that relate only to Indigenous affairs and includes any matter that relates to Indigenous peoples. The Voice is free to involve itself in any debate that affects the broader community so long as it relates to Indigenous peoples

And, you might well ask, the problem with that is... what exactly? Well, they might start objecting to mining, land-clearing & development. They never could before & be damned if we'll let them start now!!

The key part the 'No' campaign seems to ignore, or gloss over, is the term 'make representations' to Parliament & Government. In other words, they can advise, they can petition, but they have no legislative ability - they can't introduce, let alone pass, any laws or policies... & the Government of the day is free to heed or ignore their representations as it sees fit

Personally, I've been steering well clear of any articles or reports that seem designed to further the clouding of the issue, or seek to further encourage rabid partisanship. Which has certainly irritated one long-standing friend of mine, with whom I had a Facebook comments argument yesterday, leading to him saying I was being paid to parrot the Left propaganda, then getting mightily offended when I suggested he'd been manipulated by his chosen side. When I reminded him that he'd just done the same to me, he retreated by saying he was only joking... at which point I just figuratively walked away

The possibility of losing a friendship of over 40 years standing disappoints me, but to lose it because of the global plague of Trumpian politics is actually way more upsetting to me

Quite a week, this one... Not so much for me, but the world has been busy, in mostly unpleasant ways

Certainly not a good week to be a Bass player - we lost 2 great ones John Giblin who, like David Lindley who passed earlier this year, was one of those musicians you've never heard of, but have certainly heard... on music by Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Kate Bush, Simple Minds, Brand X, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney (you'd have to be a good bass player to be on a McCartney album!!), Al Green, Annie Lennox, Joan Armatrading... et infinitus cetera... We also lost Andy Rourke most famously of The Smiths, whose style was entirely his own...

It was also a normal week for Elon Musk, who can always be relied on to spout some batshit-crazy, out-of-touch, billion-dollar-baby, right-wing bullshit almost on demand... & even if you don't demand it. This week, he's still banging on about working from home & how it mostly hurts his feelings, as it certainly hasn't been proved to hurt productivity. These are obviously the words of a man with too much money invested in soon-to-be-obsolete office buildings

Meanwhile, here in Australia, we've been indulging in some not-so-casual racism because a well-respected journalist, writer & Aboriginal person had the nerve to talk openly about the atrocities inflicted on his people in the name of British Kings & Queens over the last 200 years or so... & he had the nerve to do so during a telecast of the coronation of Charles III. So of course, social media has lit up like... well. like burning crosses actually, leading to Stan Grant's decision to walk away from his job & career indefinitely, due to both the abuse directed at him & his family, but also the lack of support from his employer - the Australian Broadcasting Commission, who, you'd think, really should know better... What will it take to eradicate this kind of outdated, parochial hatred from not just Australia, but the rest of the world. Every time we breathe a sigh of relief that some old white racist son of a bitch has died, it seems their poison has infected dozens, if not hundreds of impressionable young people to carry on... & carry out this unending legacy of fear-based abuse & violence

To finish the week on a lighter note - unless any of your ancestry were on the Titanic, a picture has been doing the rounds on the 'net of a modern-day cruise ship & the Titanic, showing the truly mind-boggling size difference 100 years or so has made to nautical luxury... As someone commented - "the modern ship would simply haul the iceberg on board to supply the cocktail bar"

Some John Giblin bass-playing, on a song you may know...

& Andy Rourke, making the Smiths sound amazing... that's him on the left

So... people of colour in fantasy TV shows. How do you feel about that? Do you think that having black, or Asian elves, or a black Queen in 'Rings of Power' somehow ruins the fantasy for you, or it isn't "canon"...?! Does the fact that there's a black family in House of the Dragon offend your sensibilities?!

If your answer to either of those questions is "Yes", then please unfollow me now. We will not be friends

2 nights ago, in a little restaurant in town, there was a table of young 20-something males who came in - 3 Asians & a white guy & their unnecessarily loud table banter quickly turned to the above topic. Surprisingly, it was one of the Asian guys who was vehemently against the supposed diversity mandate that has forced his beloved fantasy genre to have actors who aren't white, playing elves etc... Apparently he finds it unrealistic, because the stories are based on European folklore & history, so there shouldn't be any people of any colour in them at all. It was the white guy who pointed out that the stories, while written by white guys are made up!!... that there isn't any reason there shouldn't be black, brown, or Asian elves... After all, if humans can look different depending on their country of origin from all across the world, why can't a fantasy character?

What bothered me though, was that this guy could suspend his reality enough to believe in dragons, wizards, magic & how people could cover huge distances in a conveniently short amount of time, but the fact that there's a black actor on screen ruins it all. Doesn't matter how good the actor is in the role, it's not right because they're not white

And don't get me started on those idiots complaining about a dark-skinned Little Mermaid. If we really wanted an accurate portrayal of a mermaid, she'd be played by a manatee & the cinema audience would have to be drunk on ship-distilled rum to see her...

Federally-speaking, the seat I live in has been a blue-ribbon Liberal stronghold for generations. Anyone who voted Labor, Greens, Australian Democrats (R.I.P.), or independent was pretty much throwing their vote away...

That is, until Tony Abbott, erstwhile Prime Minister & perpetual blinkered, god-bothering, coal-loving, racist & sexist dinosaur, completely failed to read his own room/seat & was booted out by a well-liked, progressive independent candidate who ran on a platform of climate change action, racial & sexual equality & tolerance & a raft of other ideas the Liberal Party has yet to even consider

Here we are at Federal Election time again & the Liberal Party has selected a woman to try & get their seat back. Unfortunately, they've selected a woman with outspoken, inaccurate & plain offensive views about transgender people & by extension, the whole LGBTQI+ community. She's even committed the ultimate political sin of invoking the Aboriginal Stolen Generation to back her unfounded claims about kids being removed from their homes if the parents didn't approve of their orientation. Complete bollocks of course & a profound insult to our First Nations. About the only foot-in-mouth symptom she hasn't displayed, so far, is invoking the Nazis... but there's still time, the election's not until May...

To bang another nail in the coffin of her candidacy, Tony Abbott has stated his support for her, proving that the Mad Monk hasn't improved his reading skills since being voted out of a Federal seat that was 75% in favour of Gay Marriage in the 2017 referendum

And yet... somehow, I have this gnawing dread that the Nation as a whole, will re-elect Scotty from Marketing - the man for whom the buck stops at any number of locations as far away from his desk as possible

Well, it's 7pm on the 12th of March, here in Australia & I can still read & post on LJ...

I'm in 2 minds about the boycott of Russian products. On one hand, the only way we can 'hurt' Putin is financially, so whatever little you can do, you should - so that businesses in Russia can bring pressure on Putin's junta in turn, to force a change of... well regime would be ideal, but a retreat back behind their not-inconsiderable borders would do just as well for now

On the other, is it fair to hurt the ordinary citizens of Russia because of their leader's behaviour? It's not like many of them were advocating the reclamation of Ukraine... or Georgia a few years ago (remember that?!?) for that matter...

But once you start taking the ordinary people's situation into account, you have to ask how the ordinary people of Ukraine feel about this too

And please - let's not forget, or lose sight of the Kurds, the Afghanis, the Rohingya, the Uighurs, the West Papuans... & potentially the Taiwanese - all of whom are the victims of political & physical brutality for no justifiable reasons other than the base human lust for power, greed & aggression

The Dream Team of Australian politics is gone!! First Craig Kelly leaves the Liberal Party & says he'll stand as an Independent at the next election - in a seat he only held because the Prime Minister guaranteed it for him, now his fellow sufferer of foot-in-mouth disease George Christensen has announced he's quitting politics because of a lack of progress on 'Conservative' issues Those issues, according to him, would be religious & racial prejudice, coal mines & climate change denial. Apparently the Liberal/National coalition government is not doing enough to make sure ordinary Australians can vilify Muslims, drive V8s & buy waterfront property in central Queensland by 2050

I'm sure some executive at Sky News will offer the boys a slot in their evening line-up of fair, balanced & unbiased commentariat

Another young black person shot by police...

Forget about the tragic & ironic timing of this - the day a policeman was sent to jail for the murder of George Floyd... In fact don't forget about that. You'd think on that day, of all days, the police would be trying to tread lightly, whatever city or town they're in. But no, it's business as usual, all guns blazing. Aside from the tone-deafness this implies, why on Earth did this girl have to be shot 4 TIMES!! She only had a knife & wasn't even threatening a police officer... ONE shot could have done the job, surely... & in the leg would have been fine

Blah blah split-second reaction time blah blah protecting the community blah blah judgement call blah blah officer 'stood down' blah blah the inevitable thoughts & prayers. The same generic drivel that happens every time & indeed happened with the policeman finally convicted of a murder everybody watched happen on a screen. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over & over & expecting a different result

Look, sometimes police shoot people. We know this - it happens everywhere, including here in Australia. But USA!! USA!! is the only place where it happens so depressingly frequently that it seems to be as acceptable as shooting & killing other hunters on the first day of duck season... or rabbit season

I'm sure the current administration won't go so far as to 'defund the police'... Nobody wants to see the police forces disbanded. But surely, some form of radical cleanout of outdated & dangerous practices, attitudes & probably people needs to happen & a new training focus & code of behaviour implemented, along with harsh penalties for when it isn't followed

Otherwise, who'd bet against another black kid shot dead on the street before the end of the month... week... day

Oh god... now there's a bunch of dumb Australian rednecks calling themselves Proud Boys

Reading the article, it's every bit as embarrassingly stupid as you'd expect it to be... Band-wagon jumping, coat-tail riding, puppy-eyed slavish devotion to a cause that's not their own... the simpering pride they take when an actual Proud Boy sends them a message - the only thing they lack more than a basic education is, thankfully, coherent organisation

I'm sure it's old news to the rest of the world, but I only just found out that the Prod Proud Boys were 'founded' by one of the guys who started Vice Media... though they kicked him out in 2008 because he was becoming an embarrassing racist fuckwit

The Australian knock-off version is probably the lame-brainchild of one of these fuckers...

Was he the monster, or was he just the public face of it? Will it make things better, worse, or pretty much the same, now he's been removed from the top job. We've all seen what's behind the curtain of misty-eyed 'land of the free, home of the brave, beacon of democracy, bring me your tired etc...' now - There's a racist, bigoted, sexist, repressive, greedy & self-obsessed country behind there, that at least 74 million voters are a part of. I admire Joe Biden for even putting his hand up for the job of trying to deal with all that, in the midst of a pandemic, a changing global climate, power balance & economy. I'm not sure I'd know where to start in a peaceful, inclusive fashion

A Department of Defence official said something like 'The DC insurrection wasn't sudden, or unexpected like a stroke, or an aneurysm... this was like diabetes - the results of a long-term disease'. I'm paraphrasing because I can't find the actual quote which I heard on ABC radio a couple of times today, but (s)he was right. The roots of the unrest go way deeper & waaaay further back than just the last 4 years... through both Republican & Democrat administrations alike. People aren't disenfranchised & disadvantaged overnight. Trump didn't build the bomb... but, for better or worse, he certainly applied a blowtorch to the fuse!!

Meanwhile the Great Pumpkin will have his hands full dealing with a bunch of troubles old & new, as the protective shield of the Presidency is taken from him

I'm looking forward to retiring my Trump icon... I wonder if the world will let me? Will the "Uncivil War", that Biden referred to, fizzle out, or fire up?

As more details emerge of the sinister undertones of the DC riots last week, with photos of armed, masked, camo-clad dipshits carrying cable-tie restraints, recordings of people chanting "Hang Mike Pence", along with the other usual 3-word slogans (Stop The Steal', 'Count The Votes', or alternatively 'Stop the Count', '4 More Years'... 'USA! USA!' etc...) Why is it these slogans only have 3 words? I have my theory... what's yours?

Having seen Arnold Schwarzenegger - former Republican Governor of California - comparing the riot to Kristallnacht, one of the great leaps forward by the nascent Nazi Party & personally finding it a bit of a long bow to draw & just another case of celebrity bandwagon-jumping... it was interesting to see some more images & reports from the riots, that actually bear Arnold out quite a bit. Put simply - you've heard one right-wing, racist fuckwit, you've heard them all... The baseless, unfounded, racist, bigoted, anti-semitic bullshit remains the same, only the names change to suit the times

Interesting that these white supremacists claim that "Europeans are the children of god"... given that Christianity was born in a Middle-Eastern country & that Europe actually includes Muslim countries like Turkey, Bosnia, Albania, Kosovo & even Kazakhstan. The irony that Kazakhstan's most famous exponent is actually an English Jew is not lost on me. I wonder if it's lost on Trump's supporters?!

Probably... as are a great many other things, I'd wager

In particular, the White one on Pennsylvania Ave...

A sad, sobering article on the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission) news website, highlighting the long-simmering racial tensions which have erupted so 'quickly' in the USA... they've been near the boil for a while now & all leaders have done is season them with salt...

There's an old saying that sums up the disparities in the US with a health metaphor: "When white America catches a cold, black America gets pneumonia". And right now, white America isn't just catching a cold — it's getting ravaged by coronavirus on nearly every front. The virus has claimed the lives of 103,000 Americans, registered 1.7 million positive cases and cost the country 40 million jobs.

By each measure of hardship, black Americans are bearing more of the burden but getting less attention. Most staggering is the mortality rate, which is roughly 2.4 times higher than it is for white Americans.

You'd think that a virus dubbed "the great equaliser" might help some Americans see the morbid risk of sustained racial inequality. But the national conversations around the discrepancy of death rates tend to stop at saying that black Americans are more likely to have pre-existing health conditions such as obesity, in effect putting the blame for catching the virus back on black Americans.

Good health is something that black Americans, 22 per cent of whom live in poverty, disproportionately have less means to achieve. Black Americans are also five times more likely than white Americans to be kept in jails, which have been the sites of the top three biggest outbreaks in the country.

A 19-year-old man has been shot and killed in Detroit after an unknown gunman opened fire on protesters after days of unrest in the city.

The teen was killed after an unknown person in a Dodge Durango approached a group of protesters and police in Detroit's Greektown entertainment district on Friday and opened fire, according to reports.

Look, I know it's resorting to stereotypical thinking, but I can't help assigning a skin colour to the victim & the shooter. And no, they're not the same colour. To be honest, the victim could well be white, or Latin American, or Asian... being angry about police murdering unarmed people is not an exclusively black thing & deserves to be supported & amplified by anyone with a functioning brain. But... I would bet a significant amount of money on the shooter being white... because, as pointed out in the Betoota Advocate today, the white people who think these riots are an over-reaction, are the same ones who took AR-15 rifles to a protest about not being able to get a haircut when they wanted to...

Dear USA - you've just lost 100,000 people to a disease which other similarly developed countries have managed to control by listening to scientists & co-operating with each other, resulting in much lower death rates than yours. The man who allowed all your fellow citizens to die, through callous neglect & spectacular pig-headedness is getting away with it... & you're shooting unarmed protesters instead??!!??

But she shouldn't have to & it pains me that, yet again, I have to apologise on behalf of my tribe - the Caucasian middle class... & the upper & lower ones for that matter, even though we're supposed to be a classless society down here. In some ways, we certainly are

This is primarily for 2 people who left comments on my Journal a couple of weeks ago, when I expressed concern, dismay, disbelief & exasperation at the kind of people who voted & will vote again, for Trump. One respondent told me to calm down, the other told me that it never happens & "never mind" - to whom I responded with a link showing the rise in racially motivated attacks against Hispanic & African American citizens since the Great Pumpkin came to power & started spewing racist bile all over the place

Well, now you can add Asians to that list

Trump doubled down on the name 'Chinese Virus' at a press conference on Wednesday, insisting that using the term is not racist. “It comes from China, that’s why. It comes from China. I want to be accurate,” Trump said.

Trump has received support from his allies who have defended the president for giving coronavirus a new name. “China is to blame because the culture where people eat bats and snakes and dogs and things like that … that’s why China has been a source of a lot of these viruses,” John Cornyn, a Republican senator from Texas, told a reporter when asked if the name was inappropriate.

Trump’s new name for coronavirus comes after weeks of racist attacks against Asian American seen across the country. An Asian woman in New York City wearing a face mask was assaulted and called “diseased” in early February by a stranger in a subway station. In Los Angeles, a man directed a racist rant about coronavirus to a fellow passenger, who is Asian.

One family in Fresno, California, had their car tagged with the word “Fuck Asions … and coronavirus”. A middle school student in California was told by his teacher to go to the nurse’s office after he coughed, though he told his teacher that he choked on water and was not sick. When he asked his teacher why he didn’t ask non-Asian students to go to the nurse after coughing, he was told to “let it go and move on”.

Before life so suddenly & tragically interrupted my... well, life, really... I'd been thinking about a lot of the things people have been saying & writing in the aftermath of our Federal Election, desperate to find some global trend to hang it on. Somehow, people seem to think that just because our conservative Liberal party won against what opinion polls indicated were insurmountable odds, a lot of people & especially pundits are really trying to tie it into Trump, Brexit, & the rise of the far-right. Even though the far-right candidates for both upper & lower Houses didn't fair particularly well anywhere, even in Queensland (famously described as our Alabama, by a past politician) - much to a lot of people's audible relief

Thinking about all of that, especially given our kind of sad longing to be part of a global movement, or epidemic (Again!!! Every half-baked loony with a gun here is quickly & erroneously linked to Islamic terrorism, as if we really want to be able to say "Look! See!! Us too!!!"), made my thoughts turn to where it's gone wrong, not just for Australia, but for the world in general. Okay... mostly the Western world, but that's the one I live in & feel qualified to comment on... Because I think the rise of globalism, mostly via ever more impressive technology designed to 'bring us together', is actually splitting us apart

To try & put it on a postcard - the more people of lesser opportunity, education & status see of the rest of the world, the less they like it. They're having a hard enough time hanging on to what they see as theirs, without the threat of the rich, over-educated, or overseas masses taking it away from them, let alone the horrible realisation that there aren't just a bunch of people in your own country getting better jobs than you, but they're everywhere!!!. And what if they come for your job & your path of opportunity, broken & torturous as it may be - it's still yours!! Even if you never actually get around to walking it... be damned if anyone else is going to. And possibly, the more you're fed images of fabulous no-talent nobodies having a fabulous time, the more you want that lifestyle & the angrier you get when it remains unachievable. Rightly or wrongly, the divide between rich & poor is not only growing, but it's being pushed in your face very time you look at your phone, or your 'smart' TV, or your computer - which you're struggling to keep up the payment plans on

Here in Australia, the far-right One Nation party can't seem to decide if Asian &/or Muslim immigrants/refugees are here to take your job, or take all the Government Welfare. It doesn't seem to matter that, surely, they can't do both... either message gets through to people who see themselves as having been left behind by the march of global technology & economy & are easily preached to, swayed, then mobilised to vote for racists with no solution, plan, suggestion, or agenda - other than a white one that involves saying 'No' to anything that threatens to advance Australia beyond the good old post-WWII days that nobody can really remember, but seem to represent some kind of (white) golden era...

... where women were encouraged to leave school at 16 to become a secretary, marry a middle-manager, quit the job & start breeding, Aboriginal people were not recognised as 'people', domestic violence wasn't frowned upon, or even much talked about, polio, rubella, smallpox, tuberculosis & skin cancer all did their part in keeping the population down & asbestos was the fibre of the future... Oh boy, it certainly was!

To put it on a postage stamp (remember those??), xenophobia, chronophobia, prosophobia & technophobia are the new fuel for the fires of the 21st century. Easily started & fanned large enough to start burning books in... or phones, computers, non-Christians, or eventually, just anyone who looks at you 'funny'
