My Foil has been beavering away on a labour of love for the last few weeks in the Outhouse Studio ~ a country/folk/rock song about the state of the nation. Having roped in yours truly for the electric guitar bits & a random selection of friends for the yobs chorus & vocal interjections, then sweated over a hot computer mixing & mastering it all, the polished, finished result can be heard here.

If all goes according to plan, we'll be using a Federal Gov't music initiative to distribute the song to various radio stations in time for the as-yet-uncalled Federal election...

Talk about biting the hand that feeds.

Enjoy.

Random semi-related question: if I wanted to learn some guitar, what would be a good guitar to start on?

If you want to be kind to your fingers whilst learning scales & basic chords, try a nylon-string acoustic. If you're prepared to have sore (& occasionally bleeding) fingers right from the off, I suggest a steel-string acoustic... your fingers will toughen up after a while.

The nylon-string fretboard & neck are wider than that of the steel-string, so it also depends on what feels comfortable to the size of your hand & fingers. I have small hands, so I find steel-string acoustics & electrics suit me better.

And thirdly... it depends on what kind of music you want to play.

True, that is a good question. Eventually I'd like to be able to play chord/melody lines from some of the songs I like (e.g. Live - Dance with You (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/l/live/dance_with_you_tab.htm)). Nothing classical or flamenco etc. I do like the steel string sound, but cutting my fingers doesn't sound like fun, and may discourage me from practicing. Hmm.

Perhaps I overstated that... If you only play for short periods when you first start & don't try anything flashy ~ like zipping your fingers up the neck lightning fast, you won't suffer the slices & dices. Your hands will tell you when they've had enough ~ listen to them.

Like I said, after a while they'll toughen up & you can play for longer & do more. One can't expect to become Tommy Emmanuel overnight... I've been trying for 20 years!
