True, that is a good question. Eventually I'd like to be able to play chord/melody lines from some of the songs I like (e.g. Live - Dance with You (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/l/live/dance_with_you_tab.htm)). Nothing classical or flamenco etc. I do like the steel string sound, but cutting my fingers doesn't sound like fun, and may discourage me from practicing. Hmm.
