Oldsmobiles were my father's car of choice. I was driven home in one similar to this one but in Red. He drove them for two years and traded.
My Maternal Grandparents also had Oldsmobiles. There car was always so clean and well kept that the local dealer could sell their old one before they took delivery on a new one.
One year the new on had a defective transmission. The mechanic disassembled the transmission laying out the pieces across the floor. He died overnight with the car in pieces. The dealer found them a replacement rather than take the risk that the transmission would ever be right.
I learned to drive in a 98 Olds. (That is the model not the year.)
I think I'd have had a heart attack, seeing the transmission completely disassembled too!
My Father always had a vintage car project in various stages of restoration when I was growing up. He'd been a hot-rodder in the early 60s - souping up 1930s Fords etc. I saw everything from WWII jeeps, Chevrolet trucks, Willys Jeepsters & pick-ups to a 1960s Volvo(!?!?). We'd always go to the Australia Day Motor Show in town - sometimes as participants if the current car was ready, most times as enthusiastic dreamers. I didn't inherit his self-taught mechanical skills, but I still love seeing cars like this getting around...
