An LJ 'Blog Prompt, which I thought I'd better address immediately, given my lax attitude to the others I've seen...

'I'll never forget Whats-his-name... Though he may be dead, he's not forgotten. Which could certainly be worse. He could be dead AND forgotten. Or even forgotten but not dead!

In this modern world, old Whatsisname was an anachronism. A man out of time - which is why he was usually late to any appointments... Has anybody checked under the coffin lid today? But seriously, he lived by a code that was old-fashioned even when he was born, in the Antipodean 'Winter of Love', & was sufficiently forgotten by the time he began to make a mark on his world. As such, he was seen as quaintly amusing, elegantly old-fashioned & people could never quite decide if he was serious or not. While this was doubtless frustrating to him & led to an unsatisfactory adolescence & early adulthood, he eventually became adept at using his intellect, wit, manners & morals both as armour & weapon, building his character into a formidable fortress complete with drawbridge, archers & piranha in the moat. Only then, did he feel comfortable & confident enough to really allow people through the gates

His leisure pursuits of music, photography & occasionally literature, were similarly affected. He always felt that if it wasn't good, then what was the point?. There's enough bad art in this world without blithely & insouciantly adding to it. That was a conceit he would continually point out in many pop culture 'icons', decrying both their lack of artistry & inexplicable popularity. Was there a touch of jealousy here? You betcha!! But it certainly didn't stop him from always trying to improve his skills - never truly happy, even when others expressed their appreciation... & miserable when they didn't

There will be some who feel he has been taken too soon. Others will feel it wasn't soon enough. The rest of the world will barely have noticed...'

The (cheap) coffin will then slide into the furnace... to the tune of Disco Inferno
