Sunday 23rd October - San Francisco, Gilroy, Redwood City, San Francisco

Brunch with friends today in the Presidio Club. We left Oakland a little early, after yesterday's experience with Bay Bridge traffic, so of course, today was plain sailing & we arrived in the Presidio about 25 minutes sooner than expected. Trish & Jared weren't far behind though & their friend Siobhan joined us soon after. So a table for 5 in the club, surrounded by families with young children... not a quiet room. Trish has been our USA mailing centre for a little while - receiving packages from Amazon & other services & holding on to them for us 'til today, when we collected a large box from her workplace after lunch, full of stuff for, mostly, other people in Australia. We are the next link in the courier chain, apparently

Despite the rather tempting offer of spending the day in a bar with Jared, while the ladies went shopping, after lunch he took Siobhan to the airport for her flight back to Sth Africa & then went home, while Trish, Julia & myself all piled into Travis & headed for the Gilroy Outlets complex south-east of town. Quite a long way south-east, as it turned out. We were on highway 101 for so long, I'm sure we were on the outskirts of Los Angeles by the time the shops came into view. Once there, the 2 ladies forged ahead, into bag, clothing & shoe stores, with me first trailing in their wake, then just waiting outside, then finding a bench & staying there while they traversed the mauls. Felt a lot like this guy...

A few hours later, brunch had finally worn off, so it was time to tick off another fast-food outlet - Sonics. Mostly a drive-through/drive-in affair, it had a couple of tables outside, one of which we occupied. Hot dogs, 'sandwiches' (burgers), cheese sticks & potato tots were all okay.... but mostly flavoured with hunger by that time, I felt

Back on highway 101 in reverse, heading towards San Francisco, but first into a traffic jam that went for a few miles because of... good question. Once that cleared we made good time back to town, considering how far out of town we were. As the daylight disappeared, we dropped Trish back to her place in Redwood City & said hi & 'bye to Jared one more time. We two weary shoppers then played around with various freeways back to Oakland, finding probably not the fastest way, but an interesting one that seemed to skirt most of the city, through what passes for countryside this close to a major metropolis. A quick chat with our Host & 2 out of three cats, then bed...
