Finally saw the Hobbit in 3D tonight. Not, apparently, the whizbang more-frames-per-second-than-your-brain-can-handle 3D, just the normal one... which was fine by me

Okay, yes it's a long film & yes there are bits in it that weren't in the book, but I enjoyed Radagast's expanded role (& nice to see Sylvester McCoy again). Barry Humphries' turn as the Goblin King was... odd. I wonder if he had it in his contract that his voice be recognisable, he certainly didn't sound like a goblin, let alone a King... My only complaint about the extra stuff was when Saruman turns up ~ Because LOTR came first, we now can't see him as anything but a villain, even though he hadn't turned at this point in the saga. It was nice to see a little continuity in his campaign against drugs in Middle Earth, this time complaining about Radagast's taste for mushrooms. And also nice to see that you can't separate Holmes from Watson, no matter where they are... And those bloody eagles... why couldn't they take the dwarves just that little bit further all the way to the Lonely Mountain, instead of dropping them off a hundred miles short...

All in all though, not bad, Mr Jackson... not bad

Rey tells me that according to one of the book appendices, Saruman was already starting to turn during the events of 'The Hobbit'.

When he showed up in Rivendell the soundtrack was hinting at the Evil Saruman theme from LotR, so I suspect the next movie is going to explore that in more detail.

I did like Radagast!

Oh please... I hope they won't belabour the point, like the 'fall' of Anakin in Star Wars

speaking of which... you may enjoy this ~ the 'right' way to watch the six Star Wars movies...

I hope not, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did. Going by LotR, they seem to like playing up temptation/inner conflict themes (Faramir, Gollum/Smeagol).

My main objection to the Star Wars suggestion is that it doesn't cut enough! I could live very happily without ever again sitting through Anakin & Padme's horribly contrived rolling-through-the-meadow scene... or trying to figure out why Obi-Wan walks away leaving him to a horrible death.
