The greatest triumph is the retention of the "Off" button. although in these days of "Standby" as an alternative, perhaps it's the retention of the "Off" switch on a powerpoint. Or the fusebox...
The 2nd greatest triumph is the appropriate spending of time &, more importantly, cash to solve a problem.
I had Foxtel digital connected yesterday... they rang me last week &, as a longstanding Foxtel customer (1999 I think... is that longstanding??!!) I was offered a digital connection for a paltry sum & a package that would cost me about $8 less per month than my current 'cable' deal.
Where do I sign, I said. Nowhere, they said, just make sure someone's there to let the technician in, so he can show up a week earlier than expected, make holes in your wall, mess with your telephone connection, connect everything at its most basic & inappropriate level & stuff up your speaker leads so that your amplifier goes into 'Protect' mode & shuts down at any volume above a whisper.
At least that's the situation that confronted me when I arrived home last night... No wonder I retreated to the computer & took an English test instead...
So, 2 problems: Connecting the digital audio to my 5.1 system & finding out why my amp kept shitting & shutting itself down.
Oh... & sorting out the spagettification of cables behind the AV setup...
The 1st was easy...$20 gets you a TOSlink cable (amusingly spelt by the Foxtel phone tech with a double 's') from a decent electronics store & bingo... Dolby ProLogicII does the rest. The second took time... enough to trace probably about 40 odd metres of speaker wire around my large loungeroom, over doors & behind curtains & bookshelves, trying to find where either the cable was damaged, or a connection was loose/severed. Sure enough, it was in the same area as the Foxtel 'technician' had been laying cable -metaphor deliberate. Easily &, more importantly, freely fixed.
Mentioned to Liz this evening that next pay I'm due about $1000 in commission. Also mentioned that I probably wouldn't see it. Time to go!!!
At least I can play everything loud again... although my new digital package doesn't have MTV in it... my old cable package did... Is it really such a great loss??
Am I really this shallow, or is it a phase...
