So 2010... the 'V' year for me. I started the year in a job I didn't particularly want & didn't pay enough, was made redundant from it & spent nearly 8 months unemployed & finished the year in a job I didn't really want & doesn't pay enough.

Progress.

I'm sure a year of soul-searching at the bottom of a deep metaphoric pit has done me some good in the extremely long run, but it's probably done some harm as well. Time will tell... as I'm sure those close to me will tell me also.

Anyway:~ there seems to be a year's-end meme thing going around.

1. What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before?

Spent a long period unemployed... well, longer than in 2009 anyway...

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I'm not really good at making them, or keeping them for that matter. I tend to make little resolutions throughout the year I try to stick to, but well... you know...

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

No one went into labour while they were anywhere near me.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Nearly made it through the year ... but I lost my favourite Uncle at the end of November. Vale Larry...

5. What countries did you visit?

Only interstate travel this year... Queensland & Victoria... though Queensland does feel like a different country...

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?

A disposable income after all the bills are paid.

7. What dates from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

29.11... see above. Other than that, only the usual anniversaries, birthdays etc... Some events, but the dates weren't as important as the occasions.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Completing the uphill side of my 'V' trajectory.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Starting the downhill side of my 'V' trajectory.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

The usual aches'n'pains'n'colds, but nothing of note.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

We bought a new TV... it's rather large.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

My long-suffering partner... she kept me moving, solvent & sane.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

Society in general... its inexorable slide towards the lowest, blandest & most common denominator, all the while lashing out at those who dare to be different & aspirational.

14. Where did most of your money go?

I've been asking myself that all year!!

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Our trip to Melbourne mid-year... Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo... various concerts. Quiet year, really...

16. What song will always remind you of 2010?

This one.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you: (a) happier or sadder? (b) thinner or fatter? (c) richer or poorer?

a) Actually... a little happier.
b) Possibly a little fatter, though my clothes are still the same size & I use the same belt notch
c) Richer in the coin of the spirit, but you can't pay bills with it.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Playing guitar... walking... working!!

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Job applications & interviews... worrying... moping.

20. How did you spend Christmas?

With family. With love.

21. Did you fall in love in 2010?

Maybe a little further.

22. What was your favourite TV program?

QI & Wipeout... keeping both ends of the intellect amused.

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

Not that I can recall... My Shitlist has remained constant.

24. What was the best book you read?

Probably "The Time-Traveller's Wife", which rendered the movie a disappointment.

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?

The quantum leap of quality made by Paris Wells between last year's debut album & this year's stellar follow-up.

26. What did you want and get?

Love & support.

27. What did you want and not get?

A job with Bang & Olufsen... I was sooo close!!!!!!!!!

28. What was your favourite film of this year?

'Iron Man II', 'District 9', 'Salt', 'Ass-Kick Kick-Ass', 'Hubble-3D', 'Inglourious Basterds', 'Deathly Hallows I'... & the jury's still out on 'Scott Pilgrim...'. I loved everything about the movie except Michael Cera ~ who seems to be playing just an older, slightly thinner version of his character in 'Arrested Development' in every movie I've seen him in... & it's getting annoying.

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

In Melbourne, we had dinner on/in the Tramcar restaurant... I was (& am) 43.

30. What one thing made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Hearing about the demise of a former employer's business.

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?

The same as the last XX years, really. Cuban heels, slimfit jeans, long-sleeve shirts... Hairlength & facial hair varying throughout the year

32. What kept you sane?

Photography, music, travel & my L-SP.

33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Didn't really 'fancy' any of them...

34. What political issue stirred you the most?

The arrogant, cynical & self-serving behaviour of State & Federal leaders... Same as every year really...

35. Who did you miss?

Nobody 'til the end of the year. Miss my Uncle a bit.

36. Who was the best new person you met?

A work-colleague of my L-SP. Now our mutual friend.

37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010.

I always knew the words, but learned the meaning of ~ "When you're going through Hell... keep going."

38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

"There is a crack... A crack in everything
That's how the light gets in"

And so... farewell 2010... A year not without its beauty...
