A Life Half Lived??!!
Feb. 19th, 2006 11:01 pmSo - the end of a mixed weekend.
Friday - Wafflers with a full complement of usual suspects... Lederhosen, Reynardo & the requisite autumn years crowd. Good speeches, great duck!!
Saturday - moving mattresses around Sydney & power-walking up & down Bondi Promenade, then an unplanned-for night at home consisting of a bottle of chilled white wine, the leftover food scraps in the fridge & cupboard & Twister on DVD, which I didn't hear any of, thanks to a phone call from an old friend - resident in New Zealand these last few years - who I hadn't heard from in about 18 months. Lovely to talk to him, but his timing remains as good (?) as any drummer I've ever worked with (against?). Still a great movie to watch though...
Sunday - rehearsal/songwriting with my latest singer/songwriter who's putting together a song cycle/performance piece based on childhood sexual abuse. Not quite as harrowing as the first couple of times we played together... either I'm becoming desensitised, or I'm every bit as unshockable as I often claim to be. Plus it was a good opportunity to give the new guitar a decent outing & we both performed well. Now to think about piano parts & recording schedules... all the usual things one worries about as a music director - the spoken word sections & story arc I'm quite happy to leave up to her.
Got a phone call about half an hour into the rehearsal from another singer/songwriter I'm working with - wondering why I wasn't at her place writing songs with her... oops!!! Fortunately, after some good-natured abuse, it turned out that she hadn't written any lyrics for the last piece of music I gave her, so I didn't have to feel too guilty about the clash of the sirens & we'll re-schedule through the week. Within seconds of that call came another from my main musical foil, up in Queensland attending a property seminar... don't ask (I didn't!!)... looking to schedule a rehearsal some time this week for, among other things, the wedding we're supposed to play at in about a fortnight... we still haven't learned the songs... let alone played them!! It'll be alright on the night, I always say... except it's an afternoon gig... oh dear.
So... all this, an overnight stay on Monday evening & a catch-up with another old friend on Tuesday night, not to mention the scheduled round of meetings & presentations required by my day job this week, should see me absolutely knackered, begging for sleeping tablets & 2 days off by about Thursday.
And I thought I was trying to scale everything down... Then again, compared to some weeks...
