Old, New, Borrowed, Blue
Aug. 24th, 2005 06:05 pmWell, the first post from new beginnings & endings.
Endings... I was deemed 'surplus to requirements' at my place of employment on Friday last week - just before my 3 month trial period was over, so they didn't have to give me lots of entitlements etc... Another new guy got the boot as well. As far as I, & others, can see, it wasn't a performance issue, more that the company is 'restructuring'... industry scuttlebutt suggests a takeover some time soon & they're cleaning house. None of the staff who have left of their own accord in the last month or 2 have been replaced, so hmmm...
However, the up-side is that I'm enjoying the days off with sleep-ins & I have a few contacts out there to follow up &/or pursue. And I have 3 weeks worth of wages in the bank, as well as the imminent arrival of a hefty tax refund. So things aren't really dire... yet...
Beginnings... I'm the relieved owner of a new CPU here at home, following the dramas of the last couple of weeks. Pentium IV, XP & a DVD burner. My old CPU wasn't that old, but it's nice to have the faster processor & better operating system. I'm sure I'll find a use for the DVD burner too...
The down-side is the things a new system & hardware reveals. I need to update a few components, starting cheaply with the mouse. This old one's having conniptions with XP & isn't travelling on screen very well - time to go.
So today has been spent installing all the software, resurrecting internet & e-mail (59 new messages, only a few of them spam... it's nice to be wanted, but bloody hell!!) & sending off the CV to interested parties.
Now, dinner, drink & a DVD.
