Jun. 4th, 2005 06:00 pmStill trying... & failing to remain underground.
An interesting night at the Basement on Thursday, not for the music, which was acceptable, but for being on the outskirts of other people's melodramas. Nice to be a passive, detached observer & not in the thick of it for a change. Care factor..? Not a great deal... my loyalties remain unchanged, as do my reasons for them.
A night in on Friday, watching the 3 hour 'extended' edition of Dune - the David Lynch movie. This was apparently the 'Alan Smithee' version, with a badly drawn storyboard'n'soundtrack 'Prologue' that sets the scene & makes the film 'more coherent'... apparently. DL refused to have anything to do with it & had his name removed, so now the opening credits refer to 'A Alan Smithee Film' (sic). I remember thinking at the time (20 odd years ago) that the De Laurentiis family & DL were strange bedfellows (& apparently Raffaella De L & DL were exactly that - for a while). Not having seen the film for 20 years, I bought it for $10, thinking it can't be THAT bad...
It makes the 80s Flash Gordon movie (another De Laurentiis production) look like high art. I'd forgotten that Toto (TOTO!!!) did the soundtrack & listened in vain for the Brian Eno 'Prophecy Theme'... all the while thinking of the quantum leap made by Kyle McLachlan between that film & the next time he surfaced in 'Blue Velvet'. What IS he doing these days?? Is it still Linda Evangelista??
Lots of phone calls & SMS throughout the night, so still pretty sociable for a recluse...
And tonight? Teppan-Yaki in Crows Nest, then into the unknown... Note to self: Don't wear a white shirt to Teppan-Yaki this time...
