The Weekend That Wasn't
May. 15th, 2005 01:33 pmBacktracking...
Friday night farewell for me at the usual local pub in Gladesville where all work-related events of importance are held. A good end to a day that didn't go quite as planned. I caught a ferry to Circular Quay - arriving at the ungodly hour of 6.35am (at least the sun was up by then, though... it was still dark when I boarded the boat!!) & proceeded to the wharf the RiverCats depart from. Only to learn that the first RiverCat to Gladesville wouldn't be departing until 9am...
Decision time. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings & arrows of outrageous fortune, shrug one's shoulders & have a long, leisurely breakfast in the city, before catching the first Rivercat & arriving at work at about 10am... ish - after all, what could the Italian Scullion do?? Sack me??? Or do the right thing by my erstwhile co-workers, walk up to Town Hall & catch a bus to work?
Easy decision.
I arrived at work at 7.30am - half an hour before anyone with a key to the door showed up. Passing police would have seen me loitering outside the co-ed, Catholic primary school opposite... dressed in black & looking decidedly seedy - as I always do that early in the morning - & immediately taken me in, as a 'person of interest' no doubt...
First sales call of the day at 8am & from there I believe I worked far too hard for someone who wasn't going to reap any more reward from their efforts. Not that I ever did... hence the leaving...
So, fast forward to the end of the day. Practical joke presents, a card signed by more people than I thought even knew who I was (results of a high staff turnover rate), then down the pub for drinks with a select few, games of pool with a select fewer, multi-tasking conversation & finally a lift into town & a cab back to mine with 3 British backpackers... No, I left them in the cab... they were going to Manly, so I abandoned them to their fate, poor souls...
Saturday morning: Birthday breakfast with the family for Mother. In Manly... O fortune, how you mock me!
After that, the days went awry. I was meant to have a song searching session with Gemma from my new band on Saturday afternoon/evening - something I was looking forward to. Ended up postponing her 'til Sunday & heading off to Rose Bay & Liz. A friend in need... Then, I'd either forgotten, or blanked out, that I was meant to go to the Entertainment Centre to see the 'Corporate Battle Of The Bands' Australian final. Presented by Telstra. All proceeds to the Alzheimers Association. Liz couldn't (or wouldn't) go, so I collected my sister, collected (& paid $80 for!!) the tickets & settled in for a night of...
Speeches... about Alzheimers, about Telstra, about corporate Australia, about Alzheimers. The night was hosted by Tony Squires, who was funny & Donnie Sutherland, who wasn't. And the bands?? Well... Tris & I kept escaping to the pub across the road for the first 4 hours, then stayed the last hour when the music started getting better. My drummer's band came an undeserved 3rd - they should have won...
In the meantime, Gemma has had to cancel today... bugger.
Ah well, new job tomorrow, shopping to be done. Must be moving on...
