And two for the show. Surely Simon Phillips & Leland Sklar can't be so hard up for cash ~ having been 2 of the busiest session players on drums & bass respectively ~ that they need to tour with Toto!?!?!?

Okay, I'm biased, I never liked the band & I couldn't stand their singer, who has rejoined them, ego & annoying voice intact if the accompanying article is to be believed...

In fact, it raises an interesting music trivia question. Has there ever been a band made up of session musicians which has been any good?

It's a subjective question, down to personal taste too, but I can't think of one... not The Alan Parsons Project, Toto, Bad English & any number of projects featuring either Nathan East or Virgil Donati... or possibly both.

Okay ~ in typing this & wracking my brain, I think I can nominate one band of players... The Blues Brothers, but I mean the original lineup from the 70s (Saturday Night Live & the movie) not the endless, revolving door incarnations that have trampled the legacy ever since.

Any others?

It's a fine line between 'Session Musician' & 'Backing Musician' The members of The Band started out as backing players for Ronnie Hawkins, then played under the name 'Levon & The Hawks' when drummer Levon Helm took over lead vocals when Ronnie was... unavailable, shall we say...

Then, of course, the Dylan stuff ~ backing him on the infamous UK tour (Judas!!), then hanging out with him in Woodstock when he broke his neck & recording 'The Basement Tapes', then their first album under 'The Band' name 'Music From Big Pink'.

Their status as session players is a grey area, but I see the point...
