Sometimes I Want To Be A Rhythm Guitarist

waitingmanOh god, what have I got myself into this time!!
Well this, for starters. It's a combination Christmas party/showcase/gig for a bunch of musicians who act & actors who play music & comedians who act like musicians & musicians who just act funny. Take all of that & add the slightly surreal atmosphere of the Friend In Hand pub in Glebe & it could be the party to end all parties. Wildest one in the book.
Yours truly seems to be Musical Director by default for the night, as I'll be playing with just about every confirmed band or singer so far. The one that has me worried is Ron the BassBeast's Pink Floyd covers set. Probably only 4 songs, but one of them is 'Comfortably Numb', which has 2 of the most sublime & deceptively tricky David Gilmour guitar solos I've never tried to play...
Until tonight, when I casually thought I'd sit down & work them out for rehearsal this Sunday. How hard could they be, right??
Oh shit... I knew there was a reason I not only love the guy's playing, but have never tried to copy his stuff note-for-note. I can't!
I've never slavishly copied anyone note-for-note ~ I've always gone for the feel & maybe the odd thematic phrase. Which is what I may end up doing here, a pastiche/homage to Mr Gilmour's immaculate timing & phrasing... & try not to f@$k it up too badly over both solos!!
Crap... I've just remembered. Ron wants to do 'Time' as well ~ that's another of those iconic lead-breaks... & it's not a short one either...
