All Work & Some Play
Sep. 17th, 2007 03:11 pm(Almost) the end of my weekend.
A very musical one it's been too. After work (finally) finished on Saturday, I had a couple of recuperative hours at home, before heading to a pub in Balmain to catch up with some people. There was a jazz trio playing & while the singer was no great shakes, the guitarist & bassist more than made up for that. Sensibly, over the 3 sets I heard, there were a few instrumentals in each for the 2 of them to stretch their fingers on. After a quick detour to Woolloomooloo, back to WaitingManor to see Australia defeat Wales in the Rugby World Cup, then see Australia beat England in the 20/20 Cricket Championship. I'd call that a good night.
Sunday started out way off the plan. I'd intended to pop into work for 20 minutes to update "Managing Director"/Company Namesake on a late-arising issue from Saturday. Arriving at opening time, I found our casual Boy Wonder & a few customers waiting at the doors, but no sign of "MD"/CN. So, I opened the place, sold about $1000 of stuff, then "MD"/CN & his wife saunter in after about half an hour. I wonder how he'd feel if I'd given him a written warning...
2 hours later, I sped off to my next appointment ~ picking up Wimsey & The Matron from a great little guitar shop in Annandale, where they'd been repaired, serviced, tweaked & cleaned for a very reasonable price. Then back to WaitingManor with SG for a rehearsal with a quartet version of the M.S.A... which may have to be re-named 'Strings & Pedals' ~ as we all now have little (& not-so-little) pedalboards full of effect at our feet.
Then off to the Hordern Pavillion to see Nine Inch Nails with a few thousand black-clad members of the Department of Youth. Amongst them was someone I hadn't pegged as a NIN fan. It's amazing who you can find in a black-clad crowd... in the dark. Some great t-shirts were wandering around in varying degrees of sobriety, as well as some not-so-great proto-Goth/Emo (for those who can't afford to be a Goth) 'fashion' ensembles
NIN were a more energetic, louder & better production-value show than the one we saw in May at Luna Park. Same band line-up, including a one-trick-pony guitarist who raced around the stage like a frisky dog, when not throwing his guitar around &, on one occasion, away. A long show, with no encore, but we couldn't think of anything they'd left out ~ apart from my wish to have heard some of the moody instrumental stuff from The Fragile, which was a long shot anyway for a live gig...
A pointless 'job' interview in the city today ~ another one where I talked about myself for 45 minutes & was then told the job I was interested in was gone, but "Thanks for coming in & I'll let you know if something comes up that fits your qualifications."
.......................................... (space for angry silence)..........................................
A quick catchup with my only schoolfriend afterwards at least meant that the day hasn't been wasted & now there are CDs to be burnt, Wafflers work to be done & a well-deserved wine to be opened.
