Crazily... ambitiously, capriciously I left frivolous comments on 2 people's 'blogs who are involved in the '5 Questions For You' meme (How to play: Leave a random comment on this entry & I'll think of 5 questions to ask you). So, I have been asked 10 questions, which I'm honour-bound to answer.
But first ~ According to an article on today's SMH website ~ "Completely ignoring both Cole Porter and Kurt Cobain, a poll of Britain's 50 top songwriters, conducted by Q Magazine, has concluded that these were the 10 best pop songs ever written":
1. Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve).
2. Blowin' in the Wind (Bob Dylan).
3. Born to Run (Bruce Springsteen).
4. God Only Knows (The Beach Boys).
5. Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen).
6. Life on Mars (David Bowie).
7. Perfect Day (Lou Reed).
8. Strange Fruit (sung by Billie Holiday).
9. Strawberry Fields Forever (The Beatles).
10. Sympathy for the Devil (The Rolling Stones).
Honestly... it reads like a list of 'Cool songs I've heard in movies' rather than any kind of measure of merit. Then again, that's only my 'spent waaay too much time working in music stores & have a CD & LP collection in the thousands' opinion. As a general punters list, it could certainly be worse... at least 'Aga Doo' by Black Lace isn't there.
Now... these questions:
From SarinGirl
1. Why were you born so beautiful? hehe.. ok.. name an instrument you
wish you could play, and why you currently don't know how to play it?
To complete the first part ~"Why was I born at all?" As to the second, I've always wanted to play the saxophone, but have never had the opportunity to try one, or own one. I can find my way 'round a flute, which has the same knobs'n'buttons structure as a sax, but it's just not the same...
2. If you could get Joss Whedon to bring back either Angel or Firefly,
which would you pick and why?
Firefly without a doubt. Angel had a good run & while some people may argue it had 'jumped the shark' when Connor arrived, there were still good episodes up to its forced end, but I'm happy to look back on 5 seasons. Firefly never had the chance to really get off the ground, so to speak & I find it frustrating to only have a handful of episodes & a movie in which half of them die ~ suggesting that there won't be another.
3. Name 5 albums that you think should be essential listening for everyone.
Hmm, tricky...
1. Take 5 (The Dave Brubeck Quartet) ~ simply the best Jazz album... ever!!
2. Computer World (Kraftwerk) ~ arguably, there'd be no modern electronic music without them.
3. Grace (Jeff Buckley) ~ while some prefer his old man, the loss of this guy was a real tragedy.
4. East (Cold Chisel) ~ don't laugh... this is a seriously great album!!
5. The Fragile (Nine Inch Nails) ~ take the best of several sub-genres (Ambient, Industrial, Goth, Classical Avant-Garde), wrap some catchy tunes in them, shake'n'bake'n'serve.
4. How old were you when you first picked up a guitar? and what was the
first proper thing you learnt to play on it?
I first picked up a guitar properly at 17, as a frustration/procrastination reaction to yet more bloody piano practice, tuned it in a way that made sense to me & sat down with either an Eric Clapton, Rolling Stones or Robert Johnson record & tried to copy what I heard. I was also in a band that wrote & played original material at the time, so possibly made up something & played that too.
5. Who is hotter? Lucy Liu or Julianne Moore? hehehehe...
By definition of 'hot', I'd have to say Lucy, but personally, I find them both equally attractive.
And from Aquandrian
1. Dream gig lineup crossing all music eras, genres, etc. Who would you
want to open, support, headline and then play at the afterparty?
First: Carlos Montoya. Solo spanish flamenco... with maybe a dancer or 2. Support: The (original) Dave Brubeck Quartet. Jazz. Interesting. Tuneful. Headline: No contest really... KING CRIMSON. I've never heard a band so challenging & rewarding. After-show: The Quintet of the Hot Club of France. Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli... need I say more?
2. If you were to audition for Australian Idol, what would you sing?
"Matte Kudesai" by King Crimson. It's really pretty, has a nice melody & fits my vocal range.
3. A Vox Teardrop: best creation ever or totally overrated?
Great looking guitar, but apparently a dog of a thing to play. Still, which would you prefer...

Or...

4. Where do you stand on Phil Spector orchestration?
Out of his line of fire... But seriously, it was a great effect, I just wish he didn't do it ALL THE TIME ON EVERYTHING!!! Talk about a one-trick pony...
5. Tell the truth now. You have owned an Alvin & The Chipmunks album at
some point, right?
Honestly... no. I do, however, own The Temple City Kazoo Orchestra Plays Led Zeppelin & Other Hits.

Date: 2007-09-03 05:11 am (UTC)YOU CAN PLAY ROBERT JOHNSON???!! *coughs, hits caps* Sorry. Is it hard? Cos it sounds fucking hard but then I can't even pick a note.
I'm totally fascinated by the respect Django Reinhardt seems to hold ... is he difficult to understand? Kinda like the Miles Davis of guitar or are there more accessible albums? *curious*
Also this is me shuddering at the four point guitar. Yeurk.
Out of his line of fire...
*groan* You're terrible, Muriel! But good answer, I agree.
Don't get me started on the Verve. Srsly. Fucking hideous fucking song.

Date: 2007-09-03 05:53 am (UTC)As was Django. The man had only 2 functioning fingers on his fretting hand, due to a fire injury, yet could fly around the fretboard like no one else before or since. The music's not difficult to understand, it's mostly 30s & 40s jazz & pop standards, but played in such a unique way... I was literally floored by the Quintet when I first heard them. Definitely my Party Band of choice.

Oh, and "a random comment," dutifully left. Question away!
