And this comes after yesterday's news that he wants Principals of Sydney Catholic schools to sign a kind of loyalty oath that they will abide by the church's thoroughly modern rules regarding homosexuality, religious education, sex education (or lack thereof) etc... etc...

I would say "moron" if he wasn't apparently quite a clever and well educated man. As well as being so astonishingly reactionary even the vatican has discounted him.

Well, on the other hand, "vatican" is a fairly broad term. Perhaps a better way of phrasing it is to say that he has limited support from his peers. I think, though, that like many other firebrands, he tosses his flaming torch onto nearby haystacks whenever he feels he's not been mentioned in the media recently. Surely that's one of the mortal sins?
