So, what do you get if you cross Johnny Depp & Tom Waits... with an accordion?

Something very much like Jason Webley, who a bunch of us saw in a terrace house in Newtown last night.

To explain: After Rey'n'Art'n'Norvegicus went to see the Dresden Dolls not long ago, they came back raving about one of the support acts - a guy they described in a similar way to the first sentence above. Then Rey heard about a gig JW would be doing at some Newtown venue called 'The Aviary'... for the princely sum of $5!!

I'd never heard of the venue, but gave it little thought, as there are plenty of arthouse places that pop up, hang around for a while & shut down - especially in Newtown. So, after picking up [livejournal.com profile] sarin_girl & trekking through the backstreets of the inner city, we emerged in Newtown at pretty much the right place & looked for signs of 'The Aviary'... it probably didn't help that I'd got the street address wrong... but it didn't make much difference, as it turned out to be a 2-storey terrace house down the road from a pub. A sign saying 'The Aviary" was on the ground, next to the front door & being stood in front of by a gaggle of smoking goths, who took our entry fee & bade us head for the top floor.

Aah Newtown terrace houses... it's nice to see some things never change. I felt quite nostalgic climbing the ancient, candle-lit, wooden stairway to the front lounge room - decorated with standard punk/goth/indie posters'n'paintings & populated by standard issue waifs & wastrels. I also felt quite old... as the whole scene reminded me of 1986 - in a good way, though. After some initial trepidation on Sarin's part, we found a place on the floor near the boarded-up fireplace & the i-Tunes stereo... & waited

The room filled up & JW appeared, enquired about how many people were being turned away at the door downstairs, then took his accordion & gave a 15 minute street performance for them, before returning to our crowded sitting-room. Whereupon he proceeded to give a funny, engaging & involving show for about 90 minutes - hoarse voice & all. A ragged medley from Footloose & every other bad 80s movie we could think of, Gipsy songs, Russian drinking songs, wistful goodbye songs & a couple of "It's the end of the world as we know it & it's your round" songs to finish up with...

I'm a fan...
