Well-erned awards

P&O Cruises sailed to victory in the annual Ernie Awards for chauvinism last night, winning the Gold Ernie as well as the award in the industrial category for its advertisement "Seamen Wanted", which was mentioned in the coronial inquest into the death of Dianne Brimble.

Tom Cruise won the celebrity award with his quote: "I've got Katie tucked away so no one will get to her until my child is born ... [Katie's] life from now on was going to be about being a mother. I'm not giving her the chance to turn into another Nicole."

The federal Liberal MP Bill Heffernan took out the political award for saying of the deputy federal Labor leader, Julia Gillard: "Anyone who chooses to remain deliberately barren ...they've got no idea what life's about."

The lawyer Chrisovalantis Papadopoulos won the judicial category for saying a rape was only brief and "at the very bottom of the scale of seriousness".

The Newcastle Herald's Jeff Corbett got the media award for a report about NASA ensuring there was a male as well as a female engineer on board the space shuttle in case things went wrong.

The sport category went to Netball Australia marketing manager Grant Birse, who said ABC-TV commentator Anne Sargeant was "old and detrimental" to the game.

Our on-the-spot operative, Debra Jopson, reports that the Ernies are leaving Parliament House after 14 years. Their instigator, NSW Legislative Council President Meredith Burgmann, is moving on, but a book is promised for next year.
