Out of the 'A's... past worthy contenders like Aphex Twin, Barry Adamson & African Headcharge... & into the 'B's, where one of my favourite guitarists lives
Adrian Belew
Session player to the stars - Joan Armatrading, Nine Inch Nails, Paul Simon, Laurie Anderson, Crash Test Dummies, Tori Amos &... David Bowie. Like his occasional bandmate Tony Levin, you probably have at least one album with him playing on it... Band member of the Mothers Of Invention, Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club, The Bears &... King Crimson. And a pretty good artist in his own write... right
An occasional visitor to Australia, I've spoken with him 3 times. First & third times were funny & engaging, but all too brief. The second time was one of those times where people say 'Never meet your heroes'... Okay, the gig was less than perfect & he was probably a bit preoccupied with that, he wasn't rude, but the vibe was 'Go away, so that I can get out of here'... Possibly not the best frame of mind for a meet'n'greet session. So I went - presumably he did too, not long after...
But he's a huge musical influence on me - not necessarily to copy, but be inspired by - so I can easily forgive a bit of temperament... after all, I've got one too!!
Even with two drummers, two bass players & a Warr guitar, he stands out...
