The End Of An Error Pt II

Today was the last official day of trade at Debtor's Prison ~ a fact I was only made aware of yesterday at about 2pm... Hey, I'm only the Store Manager... why tell me??!!

For the next 10-14 days I'll be dressed for sweeping, not selling, after which the owners have offered me temporary work at either/both of the other stores, neither of which really need me & I can guarantee neither of which would want me to set foot inside, given my penchant for impatience with both incompetence & in-fighting... both of which are rife within the 'organisation' for want of a better word ~ like 'shambles'.

The jobsearch continues...

Legends Of Music Pts I & II.

Leonard Cohen at the Sydney Concrete Bunker Entertainment Centre on Thursday last... was a number of words: Excellent, Exemplary, Spiritually uplifting, Sublime, Surprising... & more fun than you might think or expect.

There are plenty of articles on the Sydney Morning Herald website alone which can wax rhapsodical over the man more than I want or need to. Suffice to say that I felt privileged to be in the third row, close enough to one of my idols to spend nearly three hours with a beatific smile on my face... a rare enough occurrence these last months to be grateful. A nine-piece backing band of multi-instruments & talents (Special mentions to Roscoe Beck & the Webb Sisters... & Sharon Robinson), great sound for the EntCent... & just those songs!!!!!!!!!!!! The man himself was humble, yet commanding in presence, better vocally than anyone would expect & can still play acoustic finger-picking guitar better than I can. The quote that will stay with me... "Thank you for keeping my songs alive all these years" You're very welcome Leonard. Any time. And come back as soon as you'd like!!

By contrast I saw Jeff Beck at the Enmore Theatre last night... who brought a three-piece band with him, but spoke nary a word until the encore & blew a full-house away with instrumental pieces that spanned rock, blues, jazz, techno, world, folk & pop. My Foil was unfamiliar with JB's work, but has requested an anthological update on the strength of last night. Contrary to Leonard the night before, the sound was haphazard, with the main front-of-house PA cutting out three times... which was interesting to my Foil & I because you could hear just how loud they played on stage... again, not as loud as you might expect from a guitar hero, two session player/legends & a 20-something year-old lady bass-player from Western Australia ~ Tal Wilkenfeld, who was awe/envy & jealousy-inspiring, if only for the amount of fun she seemed to have playing onstage with Jeff Beck, David Sancious & Vinnie Colaiuta. But, again, I spent a blissful couple of hours with a smile on my face & wondering how he made it look so easy when it's patently not.

And so... to be continued: My life in the twilight of Debtor's Prison... an encore experience with Leonard tomorrow night in Bowral & then an evening with David Byrne at the Opera House on Monday night. To be continued...!!!
