Fame At Last?
Oct. 14th, 2019 07:26 pmWell, probably not... but I'm not complaining!!!

This photo just won 2nd prize in the annual Living Well Photography Competition, run by the NSW Department of Health. The theme was My Tribe &, not being much of a people photographer, this was pretty much the only photo I'd taken in the last 12 months (photos had to be taken in the last year) that fit the brief. They wanted release forms signed by the 'subject' of the photo, which almost ruled me out, as I'm certain the kid couldn't sign his name... & I wasn't sure about the chimpanzee... But the organiser encouraged me to enter anyway &, well... it's a $200 prize for 2nd place, which isn't enough to walk into work tomorrow & tell them... anything really, but it's a nice feeling of validation, no matter what the monetary reward
They asked for a description of the photo, relating it to the brief:
Photo title – ‘Two Percent Difference’
Chimpanzees & humans have 98% of their DNA in common & yet the difference between us is enormous… Or is it?
They live in family groups, educate their young, care for their elderly & display a huge range of emotions, as well as intelligence. That two percent difference between us means they don’t belittle each other, take more than they need, or destroy their environment… Sounds like a tribe I’d like to live in…
I took this photo because I saw the reflection & liked the symmetry. Only when I was processing afterwards did I see the child on the other side of the glass. I like how the child & the chimpanzee seem to be looking at each other, while at the same time, the chimpanzee is also looking away… It made me wonder who should be on which side of the glass?
98% similar, but that 2% makes all the difference
