2018 - Too Fast, Too Furious?!?
Dec. 30th, 2018 03:16 pmSeems I only did my 2017 review about 6 months ago... that's how fast this year has gone
L-SP's theory about this is a good one - when you're young, a year is a huge chunk of your life... 1/8th, 1/12th etc... so the time passes quite slowly at those ages. As you get older & those fractions get smaller & smaller, a year isn't such a large part of your life - also, you've had quite a few of them by this point, so long-term memory holds those long-ago days (hey... not so much of the long ago, if you don't mind!!) in a kind of time capsule, where they play forever. Whereas 2018 has just gone by in a flash & the drudgery & minutiae of adult life is nowhere near as memorable - so, in my case anyway, I get to the end of the year & wonder what exactly I've done/achieved/survived, that made getting up in the morning worth the effort... 365 times
Before I dive into my, admittedly sporadic, 2018 Journal entries for clues, here's what I do remember:
The great job swap of the mid-year, where I took myself off to a larger company, to do essentially the same things I've been doing, but with better opportunities for either advancement, or lateral movement into related fields... with better money, which helps. I really don't know if the company's reason for making me redundant was true (the new Showroom not performing to expectations), or if they couldn't bring themselves to say I wasn't good enough for them, so gave me a face-saving exit, but the result was the same - immediate termination, short-lived panic, then a chance encounter with my former company & their immediate offer of re-employment. Perhaps the Peter Principle is a real thing - everyone rises to the level of their own incompetence... & no further
A couple of nice, but never-long-enough road trips around New South Wales - one down the South Coast, where we did some fact-finding at various locations, with the vague plan of retiring the hell out of Sydney some day, but also because the open road unfolding under OBluV8's wheels is a wonderful thing

And a trip inland, ostensibly to visit the Western Plains Zoo, but again, more to just get out of town, with no solid plan, map, or itinerary

Taylor Swift in the rain, thunder & lightning, the surprisingly entertaining Roger Waters concert, Tommy Emmanuel's small show in Chatswood. Taking on my first ever guitar pupil/student/protegé & having to learn quite a bit myself, so I could then teach him, a Primary(!!??) School reunion that was more fun than any of the High School ones I've ever been to, re-connecting with ex-workmates from a job I had 30 years ago & discovering how much fun they are to be around... The death of my Father's twin brother & the seemingly never-ending drama that comes with family - great road-trip out to Armidale though... bringing rain to the outback...

So where are we now? Not quite where we'd like to be, or as financially secure as we'd like, but grateful to be in a country where we can switch Prime Ministers (again!!!!!!!) & nobody takes to the streets, burning cars, looting property, or shooting people - just a collective, resigned sigh & the hope that the rest of the world isn't laughing at us... well, not too loud anyway...
