My role in the family, at least since 2015, is filling the gap my Father left in the immediate family machine. Everything from changing light bulbs to active & supposedly sympathetic listening & giving, occasionally unwelcome, advice that people can ignore & keep doing the things that bring them to me for help, time & again. There's only one way out of that circle & it happened to my Father in 2015

There is/was also my former role, that I try to keep up, that of general back-up person. The one you call on when the acknowledged expert in a particular area is unavailable, or unwilling. Everything from changing light bulbs to... Hang on, this sounds familiar... but also tech support, political translation & interpretation, dictionary, thesaurus, window to the world of the arts, taxi driver & extremely basic household Mr FixIt
