Meanwhile... In The Vomitorium
Nov. 9th, 2011 10:21 pmHaving been a consumer of Asian food since the 1970s... & an enthusiastic consumer since my introduction to 'real' Chinese food in the 1990s, the MSG question has always bubbled away at the back of my brain. I always associated it with a particular kind of salty quality to the food which made you thirstier than usual... & faster than usual, but since my Chinese meals have been accompanied by quantities of alcohol ranging from 'moderate' to 'copious'... especially in the last twenty years, due to circumstances best told another time... I'd never concluded that MSG was a major problem for me & just drank more water at the end of the night... whenever that turned out to be.
However, I have known people who claim to have reactions to the substance & have treated it in much the same way as I regard things like peanut allergies ~ a symptom of modern food technologies messing with long-evolved digestive systems. My own cases in point are that I used to drink dairy milk 'til the cows came home, but can no longer stomach it... I've been a Soy Boy for the last 7-10 years. Cheeses are no problem though... And I've had to say goodbye to orange & pineapple juices in the last few years, as they too cause rumblings, burblings & eruptions in the downstairs plumbing which were, at first, inconvenient & embarrassing, then ultimately too uncomfortable to endure. Lemon juice, for some reason, remains on the menu without incident.
Now... a recent study of the origins, effects, hyperbole &, hopefully, truth about MSG has been published.
So, have we mucked around with our food chain too much... What are your food failings?
Post Script... And for those of us who have even a faint, remaining whiff of desire to make it in the Music Business this little article/opinion piece rings distressingly true...
