waitingman: (fender neck)
I went to see 'The Producers' at the Lyric Theatre last night. Not being much of a fan of theatre in general & musical theatre in particular (the last musical I saw was 'Cats' sometime in the early 80s - may Android Lloyd Webber burn in hell for his disservices to theatre), I was curious to see what has been done to my favourite Mel Brooks movie, as well as how leading luminaries like Reg Livermore & Bert Newton would measure up to the original cast - Zero Mostel & Gene Wilder are big shoes to fill...

It worked quite well, actually. It probably helps that the movie was almost a filmed play as it was. It's been expanded - new sub-plots & a slightly different 'happily-ever-after' ending (hey, this is Broadway, remember), but on the whole it's mercifully good. Seeing the production this far into its national run meant that there are probably a lot more sight gags & 'in' jokes that have been added to keep the actors amused, but I thought they were pretty funny & the cast didn't seem to be on jaded autopilot either.

Also, having front row seats probably didn't do any harm.

In other news, my 3 possible careers are still circling just beyond reach. 3 interviews later, the company I don't want to work for still haven't made an offer - which is not necessarily a bad thing, except from my account balance's point of view. The race is on to see who'll hire me first... or none of them - which is too disturbing to think about right now.

Light reading this week consists of a draft copy of a friend's honours thesis. My brain hurts.
