There are all sorts of things you could read into my current DVD viewing habits ~ Scrubs & House.

Sure, my mother's a nurse & I've grown up both seeing & hearing what hospital life is like & what happens when the patient's asleep & the relatives are gone. Some of the cruellest but funniest jokes I've heard were told to me by nurses... which leads me to why I love both these shows, despite their different outlooks.

Scrubs is easier to explain. We all love a good bodily-function joke & what better place to set them than a hospital? It also touches on the need for humour as both release & defence mechanism against the nastier of life's consequences. The different kinds & senses of humour displayed by the different characters is, like most good comedy, an effective metaphor for how we behave in other, more serious circumstances.

House is almost the other end of the line, except that it's still funny... in a much darker fashion. I find the (a)morality of the eponymous character appealing. Not surprising, as I have a rather sarcastic side to my humour &, deep down, an intolerance for what I see as time-wasting behaviour. House is a wonderful ideal ~ someone as smart as I like to think I am, who has freed himself of the shackles of ingrained reticence. Oh what a gift... to feel free to say exactly what one thinks!!

Whether this means that Scrubs is actually more realistic than House is open to debate. but, given the choice between 'J.D' Dorian & Greg House, I know who I'd rather have as my doctor.
