Some more questions from that quiz whizzing around a week or so ago...

These are from Reynardo:

1) Private schools or public?

Difficult one. When I were a lad, I went to 2 public schools before going private. The first one was great ~ supportive teachers, good playground facilities. I remember being as happy as a kid at school could be. The second was the complete opposite ~ hostile & indifferent teachers & an oppressive environment. I recall seeing the kids from Mosman High at the bus stop & feeling at once scared, horrified & superior to them. Barely 6 years later, that school topped the HSC list. I had some pretty hostile & indifferent teachers at my private schools too, but the environment was, in general, more supportive so these were the exception rather than the norm.

I would probably give the public system first shot, then see how it went.

2) Keyboards and strings I've heard - what else do you play?

Lately, I've been building up a collection of things you either hit with a hand or a stick, preferably with some semblance of rhythm. As noted in another of these inquisitions, I can also fake my way 'round a flute. Like all schoolkids of the 70s & 80s, I make interesting noises on a recorder or tin-whistle & my kazoo solos are the stuff of legend.

3) Who was your first kiss?

First kiss was with a friend of a schoolfriend of dubious virtue ~ Lynn Leatherbarrow. About 1980 I think...

4) Novelty songs are written to make a fast buck and drive us crazy. Name
3 you think should be banned forever more.

Too easy... 'Crazy Frog', 'Space Invaders', 'The Pushbike Song'. Depending on your definition of 'novelty', may I also add ' Morning Train (9-5)', '9 to 5' (Dolly Parton) & 'Believe' by Cher.

5) If you could go back 150 years and introduce a song that would change
the face of modern music, which one would you choose?

So... the 1850s ~ Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Rossini, Wagner, Verdi... the Liszt goes on. This is tricky, because there's a lot of music those guys did that should be studied by our modern songwriters.

Umm... Caravan by Duke Ellington. Maybe then black musicians would be a lot further along the road to getting the respect (& royalties) they deserve.

I think I've already passed this thing on to everyone on my friends list, so the meme stops with me.
