We go to Canberra nearly every year to play bridge, and the usual way I navigate goes a little something like this: If I want to go north-ish, I take the southernmost exit off the roundabout. Usually, I'm on the correct one.
I never know where I am, and I get lost 50m from my door, but I can navigate from regular venue to regular venue to friend's houses without actually knowing the route.
On the phone, getting directions: "We need to get to Northbourne? Driver, turn *that* way, we're somewhere near Fenner Hall, I vaguely recognise these backstreets, we got lost here last year..."
