Identity Crisis

Well, it's been a week or so, but the Cronulla riots are still causing ripples.

In a quiet moment here at work, I was trawling the Sydney Morning Herald website, as is my wont & came across this article... http://blogs.smh.com.au/thecontrarian/archives/2005/12/is_islam_the_pr.html

Having read that & thinking it fair enough & a successful trip through the minefield of issues, I read

The only group of people shown historically to be incompatible with multiculturalism is not the Muslims but the Anglo-Celtics. They have a history of oppression, subjugation and suffer delusions of moral and cultural superiority. Whether they entered into Africa or Australia or America or Asia they have refused to integrate, assimilate or even simply live in peace with the original inhabitants. They are among the most oppressive races ever to appear on the face of this earth.

Australia is clouded politically and socially by the notion of Anglo culture being the norm: Our flag is british, our National Anthem praises the British and our leaders are unproportionally of British origin.

Until Australia acknowledges who she really is then large sections of our community will continue to feel alienated and you will continue to see the Vietnamese gangs, Lebanese gangs, Aboriginal gangs etc. who stick together to gain a sense of security and belonging. Australia as a nation does not make them feel as if they belong.

The Aboriginals and the immigrants and their children need to join together to redefine Australia and Australian culture as it really is. White culture will not reign supreme in this country because it is not a white country. And if you don't like it, go back to England.

.

And was struck by how historically & currently accurate it is...

I like to think of myself as an enlightened citizen of a multi-racial & cultural country/world (the only thing I'm prejudiced against is wilful stupidity & ignorance), but it seems that the current numbers & the weight of history are against me. I'm not going to rail against past & present policies, nor be an apologist for WASPish mistakes of the last 2 millennia, but at the same time, I'm not feeling very proud of my race record.
