I've read the recommendation to "stock up" (sounds better than hoard, right?) on TP and tissues not because of the sickness itself, but so that you could bunker-in for two weeks if needed without running to the store.

Not that most modern humans have two weeks' supply of *anything* on hand these days, especially food. Except maybe a backlog of recorded TV programs. REPORTER "And how did you survive your two weeks of self-isolation from COVID19?" AVERAGE CITIZEN: "Um, Netflix?"

We've also read the advice of stockpiling drinking water. I think sometimes writers/reporters just take the emergency script for hurricanes/typhoons and quickly change the heading to .
